Or anywhere near his DPS?

If so what should I be dropping points into?

Not sure. Hmm...pick up and fully upgrade the Speed sustain, maybe pick up the Assassin spec so you can weaken your enemy. Evade and its upgrade makes into a useful stun...that gets you away from things. Back to Back is good if there is someone out in the open you can retreat to. Getting Shadow for Decoy would be useful (especially if you turn it into a bomb).

Dex for power and Cunning for Crit Chance, get ahold of all tomes you can find that raise hawkes attributes (you should be able to get around 8-10 extra attribute points, and put all those into Dex or cun as well, get as many attack speed upgrades as possible

Cunning gives you crit damage not crit chance. But anyway yeah you can more than match Varric's damage because you have the Assassin tree and he doesn't. The passive ability alone boosts your crit damage a huge amount, and as if that isn't enough you also have Assassinate.

My first playthrough was with an archer rogue. I was sitting on about 150+DPS while Varric was down around 80 or so. As an archer, you'll want to specialize in the ASSASSIN specialization ASAP. Assassinate shreds through enemies, and a great combo to use is (can't remember the name) the talent that gives auto crit hits + Anders using Haste. You shoot twice as fast with automatic crit hits. (use that after using mark of death as well as hexing a boss for annihilation)

I dropped points in about a 2/1 ratio for dexterity/cunning. Every other level i'd go 1 dex 1 cun 1 will/cons (will/cons varied every other time i'd go this format)

IMO: Shadow=DW rogue, Assassin=Archer rogue but both work.

Why limit yourself? Shadow + assassin = awesome.

But assassin is best early on for archers because they have a serious stamina problem.

I'm currently Duelist/Assassin on my DW rogue and he's a DPS monster.

Upgraded throw the gauntlet + Mark of Assassin + Horror(Merrill)+ Twin Fangs= Bye bye boss or at least 80-90% HP :)

I actually went DW specc'ed in both Duelist and Assassin, and both the burst damage and sustained DPS are insane. They combine beautifully. One of my favorite combos in the game....

DW Rogue throw mark of death
Fenris charges to gain aggro and Stagger
DW rogue activates the precision strikes (or whatever the assassin power is called) for 100% crit chance
Then BAM - Use the Duelist top level attack with upgrade. You teleport across the field for a high damage backstab with auto crit from the assassin power, lowered resistance on the mob, and I think 3x or 4x damage from the stagger combo upgrade......
This one shots pretty much everything. Anything still standing.... Assassinate. Auto crit and lowered resistance will both still be active in that time frame.

I went Archer rouge and maxed out Speed with Harmony and had equip ect.. and was over Varrics DPS a little but only really surpassed him when I used the Primal (?) rune made from the Idol piece that added 36% speed to my best bow. I made Varric super fast with Bianca's song and Speed and Harmony so he was close to me until that rune. Side note- I only used the shadow and assassian for the first passive powers and had an 94% crit chance with every NORMAL shot so I always did more damage than Varric because of Crits.

Bit of a shame being an assassin and not grabbing Devious Harm and Assassinate.

my DPS was over 200 as a DW rogue (crit damage over 230%), while Varrics was still down near 150's at lvl 24. Was never an issue with me catching him.. it was always about all of my companions having 1/2 or less DPS of my DW rogue.

What I did was use Assasin first and then 2 points in Shadow (for +25% critical damage and +25%critical damage and DISORIENT when obscured). Now I just use Bursting Arrow (in front of me), Fatiguing Fog or Chameleon's Breath with Pinpoint Strikes for maximum damage and DISORIENT which my warrior and mages benefit from. Also putting enough points in cunning to further boost critical damage and also defense. So while obscurred you are almost impossible to get hit while dealing enormeous amounts of damage.

I feel like Varric's crossbow does more DPS than it should. It's almost like I'm cheating with him in my party.

It's even better if you have two mages in your party with upgraded haste...then you have constant 2x attack speed
