I have managed to beat Dragon age 2 on nightmare and I came to quite a few areas of the game that I can only say were absolutely ridicules after I managed to beat these areas I noticed quite a few people are asking questions on these forums about tactics and how to do them successfully I thought it would be nice if I listed my personal experience on beating these areas on nightmare. I hope you all appreciate it wether it helps you or not. There may be minor spoilers but I will try my best to avoid them. But mainly my success was due to my main character being a spirt mage so keep in mind you will probably have to do things a little bit differently if this is not the direction you took I will explain this guide from my perspective. With careful playing I highly doubt I drank over 15 potions through the entire game.

offered and lost fanatics-  assumeing you wish to save the arishok warriors there will be masses of fanatics four piles to be precise but this battle is actually incredibely easy once you figure it out The first thing you are going to want to do is run all the way back to the start of this dungeon. This is not going to stop the fanatics from attacking you but you can cluster them on the stairs Next Make sure you have merril with a fully upgraded primal tree. and varric in your party anders can work as well but I prefered varric. Aveline should be tanking the stairs With merril upgraded fully use tempest and chainlightning on the piles of fanatics. with your main character working on healing and if you have it summoning the dog The fanatics will attack your mages often if this happens run around in circles while the your other two ranged characters pick them off your tank should do fine at holding the stairs rinse and repeat. Haveing merril and your main character assumeing it is a mage have the spell horror can be a great asset as well althrough the game I suggest getting it and crushing prison if you can.

The High Dragon- What can I say this battle on nightmare was exacly that a nightmare not because of the high dragon because of the mini battles in between. In order to beat this part it would be wise to invest in some temporary fire resistance runes in your companions armor especially your tank as well as Upgrade your mage character with the force attribute the one that provides 100+ fortitude I cant recall the name of it but it is withen the force mage tree. To avoid being knocked back by the dragon spitting fireballs With sufficent fire resistance and a good healer along with anders you will do fine when the smaller drakes spawn there will be tons of them. Try to lure as many as you can into a large pile and use cone of cold on them this will severely hurt them and you should be able to pick them off I recommend useing the staff cold blooded it cost around 100+ sovereigns but it does a massive amount of cold damage and has so much mana regeneration that you will barely ever need to drink lyrium potions even in the most drawn out of battles You can buy it at the mage in the wounded coast the second year I believe Its worth the investment as It is one of the best staffs in the game IMO. however on nightmare many mercenarys are immune to cold so have a back up staff as well. When it comes to the larger dragons spawning *the third time the dragon goes up top* before he does make sure you are all the way up north so you don't have to fight both of the smaller dragon bosses at the same time.

Blood mage/Shades end battle-  I do not know if this battle happens if you side with the templars but assumeing you side with the mages there is a blood mage at a fountain in the docks around the end of the game and from my experience this battle is impossible to win on nightmare difficulty even with AOE spells I do not know if this was and error on part of bioware like maybe your supposed to have circle mages with you but I could not do this even with the most careful planning. Over 3 waves of a dozen or more shades spawn coupled with a blood mage and a pride demon so thats two mini bosses and possiblely over 30 high health enemies. The best way to do this on nightmare is to have your party hold position as close to the stairs leading down as possible. Select your main character and SLOWLY inch your way toward the blood mage the minute she turns to attack you summon your dog select your party and run all the way back up the stairs as far as you can, After the shades kill the dog they will mass toward your party after you kill them you can slowly pick off the remaining shades that spawn around the blood mage with little worry Some people may call this cheap but I call it a tactic this battle is by far the hardest battle in the game in my opinion.

Assumeing people find my tactics useful and helpful I will add more invovleing the rock wraith and some other battles and if you have any recommendations  or just want to say my walkthrough sucks go ahead and do so I am just trying to help people not have as much trouble as I did figureing out how to beat these annoying parts.
