In my first playthrough i didn't take Bethany assuming she would die and she joined the circle.

In my second playthrough i'd read that i could get my sibling to become a grey warden, so i took Carver along... he died

Is it friend/rival related?

He seemed to rival me more regardless of whatever i did or said and i'm saved after doing all the other quests so i'm buggered if it is standing related...

I'd read he'd become less whiney as a warden, but as a templar he's be more so i didn't fancy it.

So should i make him a templar anyway for the extra content, or is it equally rewarding to have him dead in terms of content?

Havent done it myself but Im guessing you need Anders with you?

You need to have a warden (anders) with you in the deep roads for that to work. And I don't actually know when you get warden siblings back.

Basically you'll see them a couple times either way, but they don't rejoin you until well into Act 3, and that's only if you take the right side... or something. I was neutral with Carver and he was a Grey Warden, so I had no problem getting him to join the team again.

Carver can actually become a Warden or Templar. If you leave him at home he joins the templars, if you take him into the deep roads he dies or becomes a grey warden if you also got anders in the group.

The Warden sibling will make three cameo appearances, one in Act 2 during the Demands of the Qun quest with the other Wardens you run into. Then in Act 3 they will be in the Finding Nathaniel quest if he survived Awakenings, also they will be the kidnap victim in Best Served Cold. They will be able to join you again as a party member during Last Straw after you pick your initial side when you start to make your way to the Gallows.

Well You only have your sibling in the first act ...then they either join the Templar (Carver) or taken to The Circle (Bethany) or Die (If you take them with you to the deep road) or Grey Warden (Deep Roads but with Anders in the Party)

If they are Alive they return for the final battle ... but you can only use them active in the first act

Not true. When my mage supported the templars Caver became a fully selectable teammember again for the fights in the gallows. I assume the same happens with cirle Bethany and a mage supporter.

It seems like you have them a little longer if you make them a Warden then Circle/Templars. Cause Warden Bethany showed up on my rogue play through after the talk with Meredith, Orsino, Anders stunt and I was forced to pick a side. After that first fight I started to make my way to the Gallows and a cut scene where a demon popped up and Bethany killed it saving Hawke there was a little talk and then she was selectable if I choose too.

Ahh so Anders is the key!

It did cross my mind but i thought with him being solo and a bit... preoccupied, that it would be a bit daft for him suddenly to turn back into "grey warden mode".

Plus i just can't stomach him at all

I thought that maybe i'd bump into Stroud in the deep roads, you know with us bumping into him later in the game.
