Usually when I get Sten's "callow" speech that opens up the quest to find his sword, it's because I spent a few minutes grinding everyone's approval up right out of Lothering. This time around I decided that I'd not do that and instead just talk to my party members whenever I felt it'd be appropriate.
I also decided to screw metagaming and head to Redcliffe first instead of clearing the Circle. I brought Sten with and managed to convince him that we really did need to help against the zombie horde and stuff, but he was still irritated by the promise to save the blacksmith's daughter. So because of that I decided to take him with into the castle, just to prove him wrong.
So fast-forward to the castle infiltration, clearing out zombies and shades and a mabari or four, when we come to the room Valena is in. I go in, talk to her, and convince her to leave through the secret passage. Then, on a lark, I chatted up Sten...
"You are not quite as callow as I expected. That is... unexpected."
I know that was probably entirely a coincidence, but I felt the timing was just perfect.
Now that was expertly timed. (SPOILERS - Redcliffe/Sten related)
