AO3 did just add author alerts, and I think story alerts will be very soon, so they're slowly coming along.

*nodnod* Yeah I saw the thing about author alerts.  I'll just keep holding out that they keep adding more and more features.  I really do prefer the formatting over there to ffnet.

Uploading over there is so blissfully easy. Paste right from the document to the rich text window and you're done. It really highlights what a hassle the whole upload document, edit document, edit story process is on ffnet.

Oh totally.  The first time I was putting stuff over there it was all unicorns and kittens and rainbows.  I think it would take a long time for people to migrate away from the pit though, alas.

So...I'm new here (obviously) but I've read some of the fic here and I'm blown away. You guys have some serious talent. It's kind of intimidating, honestly.

Anyway, I've got this annoying plot bunny that just won't leave me alone and thought I might as well post it here.

It's Ferelden, only a few months after the Hero has ended the fifth blight. A young noble by the name of Jace Sherrad doesn't want to get married off to a "suitable wife", so he grabs his mage friend Coron and runs for it. He's on his way to pick up his true love Eliza when...odd things happen.

I've got a basic outline written up, and I know all the characters I want to use. They're all new, cannon characters will only make brief cameos, which seems to be rare in DA fanfic. But meh. Hopefully I'll have a half decent first chapter up soon...ish.

So it's been a few days but I finally managed to get the first chapter to look sort of the way I wanted it to. So the first chapter of Fade to Grey is up: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6893514/1/

It is frustrating. I did hear about a new site in the works called www.thefanfictionaddiction.com. It looks pretty nice. I sent one of the owners an email to add a Dragon Age section and got a pretty prompt reply stating they are working on it. At least it is another option should FF.net continue to tank.

I definitely think we should be flinging our full support to AO3. Not only do they have the standing infrastructure in place already, but frankly, the entire project is just cool.

If you folks haven't checked out the Organization for Transformative Works and what they're all about, you really, really should. It's a great organization that is dedicated to preserving and showcasing fan culture.

Furthermore, AO3 has great things on the horizon. Already, they allow embedded images and videos in fanfic posts. Which means, if I have a wonderful illustration to include at the end of a chapter I can do so easily. Can't do that at ff.net.

But more than that, they're not far off from launching a fanart archive that will go hand-in-hand with their fanfic archive.

What does this mean? It means they're going to give DeviantArt a run for their money, because dA doesn't have really good fanfic support (especially for adult-oriented fanfics, which are expressly forbidden, ahem!)

Also in the works will be archiving and support for fanvideos, filks, roleplay, prompt memes, name it, if it's a part of fan culture, they intend to include functionality for it. So instead of going to The Pit for our fanfic, the kink-meme on LJ for our naughty fix, dA for fanart and YouTube for fanvids, it's all going to be RIGHT THERE. By fans for fans brought to you by an organization whose raison d'etre is promoting fanworks.

Seriously... there is no end to the awesomeness of the vision of the OTW and AO3.

On that same note, I highly encourage people to support DreamWidth for much the same reason. If you haven't read their guiding principles and diversity statement, do so. It's actually a much better site for promoting fanworks than LJ. Like AO3, they simply don't have the name recognition yet. But they're worth promoting.

I appreciate the preaching. I was not aware of some of the options on these other sites. Honestly, most of my stuff is handwritten in a five part notebook, the whole idea of posting my works online is relatively new to me. I am all for supporting sites that offer so many perks for the artists. I agree, the thought of adding to yet another site is not the most appealing but I thought to simply put the option there. As for the M stuff, I had no idea DA was so, limiting. That's too bad. Does Ao3 allow mature content? My husband will be crushed if he can't read his Meredith smut online.

Yes, AO3 allows for mature content, in fact, they're far more welcoming of it that ff.net (in theory, M+ or AO material isn't allowed on ff.net at all, and they've had a couple very notable purges in the past.) dA is even more restrictive, and people have reported having their stuff yanked for being too explicit (which boggles my mind, considering the images dA allows to be posted.)

That is good to know Elysium, thank you. I have an account there, and it would seem my steamy Meredith content will have to go there. It seems so silly to me to allow nudity but not allow description in a story. It seems all my works will be on hold at DA for fear they will offend. My Anders muse wants to write a manifesto to free the writers! lol We do add a rating to our works and warnings and whatnot. AO3 it is. Thanks ladies. =)
