Both DW and AO3 are on an invite system at the moment. AO3, from what I know, is very fast when people request codes- I've seen people say theirs arrived in a few hours. (also, I have a few invites if anyone needs one.)
DW gave People of Thedas an open invite link, though, since they were chewing through codes at such a clip. (and with good reason- it's a fantastic community. I highly encourage people to check it out.)

I signed up for it and find it a bit intimidating, tell you the truth. I guess it is a matter of getting used to it. I like what I see there, it is just a matter of figuring out how to post. I am not a fan of LJ, that place confuzzles me.

AO3 is, to me, so much easier to update than ffnet that it isn't even funny. It's different but the overall system has fewer steps and less hassle. None of that "upload document, edit story, upload chapter" BS. Just click "add chapter" on your list of stories, paste from your word processor, and hit submit.
This makes sense! Thank you.

The tags can get a bit more complicated. But then, the tags are completely optional.

Send me an invite, please, if you still have one?

I have no invitations at the moment, but I've requested more. PM me an email address and I will fling you one when I get them. Otherwise, just sign up for membership yourself--most people report being accepted within just a few hours, even without an invite.

Ultimately I'm pretty lazy. I am very much an "edit as I go" sort of writer. I do a very, very quick once-over after the chapter is done, but nothing intensive. I don't have the patience or motivation to send off chapters, wait for someone, make changes, send it back again...whatever. It's fanfic, not an honors thesis (or my original non-fanfic writing).
Plus, my degree is in English. If I can't trust my own grammar I should probably be forced to take that off the wall.
I'm probably not the right person to answer this.

Question: Do any of you guys use pre-readers or editors? Where did you meet them, and how did you start collaborating? I've been trying to wrangle a good number of pre-readers to help with flow and pacing, as well as catching errors and general quality control, and been wondering what others do to ensure that their work is the best it can be.
As a disclaimer, my work is far from the best it can be AND I think that allowing too much input can create a detrimental separation between yourself and your stories.
However, I do use a beta reader for chapters that I think are complicated, or plot heavy, just to get a sense of how it comes across to someone who isn't sharing my brain. I also use mine as a sounding board for different ideas as they pop up and to keep me in check on characterization and what not.
I also provide fic-therapy to another writer, which means mostly just looking for the off awkwardly written passage, letting her know if I think that she's writing too much smutty stuff (never!) and to give input on any sort of pacing/characterization/plot issues she might have.
Both of these people I met on the boards, so it's a much more casual sort of set up than I imagine getting a beta through ff.net would be. This is good, because I would probably drive a real beta crazy (and be worthless as one, myself).

I met my betas either by reading their fic or because they were regular responders to my fic before I had a beta. A relationship evolved. I'm an absolutely terrible proof-reader, because my brain wants to skim over a lot of what I've written, because hey, I already know what it says, right? So a grammar beta is something of a necessity.
My betas have access to my "outline" (which is actually usually more of a stream-of-consciousness "notes to self" thin) and sometimes they will leave me notes on things that strike their interest, when they think there's a particular aspect or ramification to what I'm planning that needs to be sure to be addressed. And sometimes when my plot-brain suddenly takes a sharp turn toward something I hadn't initially planned for, I'll solicit their thoughts on the development. But they don't rip my plot to shreds or attempt to write my story for me and are pretty respectful of my vision as the author.
Sometimes if I seem to be stuck--say the characters are discussing something and the discussion is going in circles and not resolving itself, or they're just not moving on to What Comes Next--I'll send my betas an email or IM and say "can you take a look at this and help me break the log-jam?" and that's really helpful. Usually it only takes a single sentence or observation, and often it's something really obvious that I was missing because of the whole forest for the trees thing. THAT is insanely helpful, and I wouldn't be sitting on a 3-1/2 week chapter buffer without it.

I have a couple betas I use and I do beta for people. I met mine through the Swooping_is_bad LJ group and pretty much chat to them every day on IRC. We message/email etc. stuff.
There is a group on LJ you can sign up for or look at if you want to find people willing to beta. Go here: http://community.liv...ragonage_betas/

I have Betas. But not for grammar. Unless it's the little fiddly bits everyone seems to miss no matter what.
I run things by them to help me keep track of whether I've screwed up someone's characterization somewhere, or whether a fight scene works...

I'm boggling here for a moment but I spent months on my Morrigan story, have 7 reviews, the last 4 came within the last month or so. I just threw up the second chapter of my Merrill story and the first chapter already gained 7 reviews in 6 days. I'm up to 10 now, and I'm freakin' out. I'm gonna chalk it up to DA2 being all shiny and new and I came into the DAO fanfic arena almost a year after release. Oy, I mean I'm happy the Merrill story has so much attention, almost 1200 hits and over 700 visitors for 2 measley chapters, but damn... anyway, rant over. Move along now.
Just popping in to say that I actually did read In The Land Of Ever from start to finish and I really enjoyed it. I don't think I commented on it or anything but yeah, shouldn't let stuff like that discourage ya!

Oh wow, thanks! Uhh... I'm not discouraged, I just remembered doing all sorts of "planning" an avid procrastinator such as myself would not normally do. Its just I was boggling at just how quickly people really picked up on Sweet Child O' Mine, I guess 'cause its more upbeat and jokey with a bunch of friends throwing a shindig rather than a couple of sad sacks trying to raise a kid. lolFinked wrote...

Honestly, I've been going back and forth about a similar thing myself. I can't decide what I want to write and it is driving me batty. I have a ton of ideas but I'm a bit scatterbrained about them all.
So instead of writing something substantial, I seem to keep cranking out little bits of crackfic for k!meme.
