Yeah, but no plots. Just their characters and motivations.
I don't want to write two novelizations of DA2.
Maybe just do collections of shorts for one or both of them, and pick the one that would make the best novelization for that kind of thing. (I'm sort of doing this, but that's mostly because I don't like leaving my DAO fic hanging *and* starting a similar DA2 project.)

I just think up interesting situations which exhibit aspects of their character, and outline what they would do in said situation. I never really understood the desire to novelize the game.

I don't really want to.
I'll just keep lurking on the kmeme till something slaps me. What I've got now is too nebulous to do anything with. But it's still bugging me.

Would it be considered realistic for Flemeth to possess people? Not too out of character, I hope?

I like that fanfiction can allow you to explore aspects of the story the game doesn't touch on. The narrative breaks between years is excellent for this.
Oh definitely. There are a lot of possibilities in those 'dark' years. I know I'm as excited to read fic almost as much as I am to write it simply to see all the ideas folks have about what we did not see.

I am liking novelising the game for now... It is giving me something to work on my writing style with while my thoughts for the inbetweens come together.
I started doing that some time last year. I think I wrote sixteen odd chapters before I ever got my elf to Ostagar. I think it is a great exercise for developing style as well as other strengths in writing, but I have to admit, after too long gone from it and DA2 came out, it's hard to get back into that mindset. I found myself feeling so in a hurry today, wanting out of Ostagar. I have my Dalish elf at the ready, poised at the end of DA2 to give Merrill a what for! lol

Absolutely... I'm four chapters in (well, four is almost done) and not even to the start of the game yet. It's the inbetween years and the backgrounds that interest me.
This. I love exploring the backgrounds of characters, those we get to sink our teeth into.

The LiveJournal DA community's weekly fic prompt thread doesn't help either.
I have two posts with collections of short fics (100 - 400 words each) from the prompt thread here and here and a longer (4600+ words) m!Hawke/Anders post-The Last Straw fic here.

It's harder than it looks, especially when you're going in between the scenes.

Sure, but it would mean she would change bodies. And she would not possess just anyone, I think.LupusYondergirl wrote...
Isn't that basically what Morrigan said her plan was from the get go in Origins?
Plus, there's a good chance Flemeth will return in future installments, so that would put you in AU territory.

But dammit if DA2's gaps don't leave so much room for playing around, and fanfic is simply less stressful to me because I don't beat myself up if it isn't "just right."
That's pretty much what I'm doing--filling in the gaps. Though I am working on a fair amount of post-Gallows fanfiction too. The idea of Hawke and Anders running off together as crazy apostate revolutionaries is too delicious to pass up.

I'd play with that... but I don't like venturing into AU territory. And anything I place after that is bound to be AU.

So I'm coming to a close with my short story. Does anyone else have a hard time figuring out how to end a story when they get there, especially on the longer stories?
Indeed! That is definitely much harder than beginning them!
I'd never read fan fiction before, but I wanted more of the characters, especially Fenris.
A friend recommended fanfiction.net and I've been having fun reading stuff there. And I've been obsessed with writing my own! Just uploaded the first three chapters of my M!Hawke/Fenris story, Lyrium and Ashes.

One of my characters is traveling the Free Marches, but I have NO IDEA how big they are. I know they're city states, so presumably not as large as say Australia or the United States, but exactly how big? France-sized? Smaller? How long would it take to walk from Kirkwall to Starkhaven or Starkhaven to Tantervale?
I would hate to make a guess and look like a moron.

Map of Thedas
The Free Marches are slightly smaller than Ferelden, and keep in mind that each city-state probably only has control of a dozen or so miles outside of the main city (aside from some big ones, like Nevarra was before it split off into a nation-state.)
