I generally don't have too much trouble getting people to ACT in character but I suck at dialogue. When I'm really unsure about a line I try hearing it in my head as read by the voice actor. Usually that reveals major flaws pretty quickly, like something too informal or stilted.

The fact that you can hear them at all is a good sign.

What is everyone working on right now, anyway?

I've got nothing DA2 related (at least nothing ready to show), I just have the fics in my sig I'm working on.

A mostrous DA2 playthrough fic that will devour the rest of my summer...I just know it. I'm currently debating breaking it up into three parts, one for each Act, so the tonal and thematic shifts will be less abrupt. It's how I originally conceived it and it might be less daunting for myself and readers to break it into more manageable chunks. Although 200K words/act is kinda pushing the bounds of what can be called a "chunk".

Beyond that...writing shorts for Manifestos Welcome. I have an uncontrollable urge to start a Shep/Garrus fic, but I swore I'd wait until closer to the ME3's release before I delved into that madness.

Heh, I couldn't resist that one.

I've got no luck in writing shorts.  None.  Everything wants to go long.

I have nothing DA2 related at the moment, I'm mostly writing stories for modding purposes. After that I might end up writing a few DA2 shorts that I planned a while ago.

I really can't write long stories, I just lose steam after a while. My DAO fic testafies to this, with its erratic updates and awkward writing style shifts. So now I break stories up into smaller chuncks and write those so I don't end up not finishing something.

Strangely enough, the story of mine on AO3 that people seemed to like the most was under 1k words... I'm not sure what to think of that.

You're short, sweet and to the point?

I took a DA:O related nightmare and got 150K words out of it. I ramble. LOL

I’ve still got… ugh… three DAO fics going (my Maggie Amell fics Apostates of Amaranthine and Blue Skies, and my Jowan/F!Brosca fic Stone and Sky), which means I SHOULDN’T have a DA2 fic.  But I do.  And, since I’m a crazy woman with an obsession, Leap is mage f!Hawke/Anders.  Because I am all Anders all the time.  Except when I’m all about Jowan.  (which I decided, some time ago, would be set in the Stone and Sky universe.  Where Maggie still exists, but more in the format like her cameos in Miri1984’s fics).
It… well, it makes sense to ME.  And Miri.

And this doesn’t include my DA2 oneshots collection Falling, or my AOA-universe oneshots collection.  Or the Malcolm Hawke/Leandra Amell fic I wrote for the Bioware Big Bang that still needs a title.

No wonder I'm so damn slow to update...

I've only done some snippets on the DA2 stuff with Margaret Hawke. I can't seem to do more til my DA:O Monstrosity is complete. Thankfully

So, I'm trying to transition what I did with one character to what he becomes in DA2. Anyone else having to do that or do you just resign yourself to the AU?

AU and loving it. Granted, none of my mains are involved, and I'm going off the rails for Act 3 anyway. Because *grumble mumble snarl* eh, you all know the drill by now.

But "pirate Zevran shipwrecked with Isabela who kicked around Kirkwall until they both left with the tome of Koslun, sold it and are both now back on a boat" (deep breath!) is much more interesting and useful to me than "Zevran taking over the Crows."

I was more worried about what I did to Cullen. But you have a point about Zevran. Moira isn't going to like him taking it over.

If I were you, I would be so tempted to swap out DA2 Cullen for Bran, the door-guarding templar in the Mage Origin. It makes the Kirkwall Knight Captain a former Ferelden Circle templar, a canon character with a name, and yet be not-Cullen. All the DA2 lines would work about as well; you didn't have to be imprisoned in a glowy pink forcefield to learn some hard lessons from Uldred's revolt, after all.

Huh. Does admit some possible confusion between Knight Captain Bran and Seneschal Bran, then. But that could be handled, I think.

I think I can finagle it so that TR Cullen and DA2 Cullen reconcile. It's just... how to get there. I've been brainstorming with one of my Betas and I think found a work around.

I need my head examined.

I'm actually considering a novelization of DA2 like I've done for ME2 with Loved. But this time, I'd be uniting The Rescue with DA2.

Do I really have time for this? I have a real life novel to revise.

As much as I like DA2, a novelization might be a bad idea. Some things that work in games don't mesh well with a novel-type story. For example, you'd have to fill in a lot of blanks. Even if you divided the story into three "volumes" (one for each Act) to allow time skips, you'd need to explain things that a player can just assume. Like how everything in Act 1 actually works. Act 1's pacing alone could give me sleepless nights trying to plan out...

I'm not trying to discourage or anything, I just think that real life novel might be a higher priority. ;)

(Maybe you could make a chain of connected short stories... that would be in keeping with the narrative style of the game itself. You could even have the interrogaton scenes that way.)

Well, that's actually what Loved is. Interconnected instances of my Shepard's journey through Mass Effect 2.

I confess that I may have just (somewhat) become so overwhelmed by my playthrough fic that I have (somewhat) given up. And will be modifying it to be more like one-shots and less like continuous plot rather than giving up entirely. I realized that I don't have the time, energy or ability to write a full-on novelization of DA2. But I don't really want to give up on Briar yet.

IF I did this, it would be more from Hawke's diary entries, not something say Varric wrote. Though that would be funny.

Maybe we could gather some points here on how to write a character's voice?

I am struggling a bit with Fenris, he seems to use a stilted kind of speach, preferring the long and old version of modal verbs (cannot instead of can't; or shall instead of should).
But then on the other side he is not the verbal type, using short sentences. Am I correct with that?

What about Carver? I can't determine what differentiates his voice.

Uhhh and I can't access Livejournal, you?

Carver's cadence is just like Hawke's, his tone is just angrier.

I really have to finish my DA2 stuff. I'm so close but so far-- one chapter left for my Bethany family bonding fic. Or so I think. Then again, it was only supposed to be five chapters to begin with, and I posted chapter 10 or 11 on Thursday. That's sort of the foundation for the next chapter of my goodbye Kirkwall fic, so I really have to finish. And then I can finally, maybe, 6 mos. down the line, finish the last three chapters of the farewell fic. Which means, hopefully, I can finally uninstall the game and put a close to it in my life. :D  Really, as frustrating as I find it, it's still sparked a good 50K words or more.

Which of course, has detracted from the other two outstading fics I haven't updated in forever-- my womanizing Shepard fic or my Star Wars fic.  Poor Atton's been stranded forever in the horrible middle part that I haven't fully envisioned yet.  It sucks because I have a great climax and ending all planned out, and have had it planned out for a couple of years now, but I'm floundering around trying to get there.

So! We'll see how my decision to split my DA2 fic into three separate stories pans out. I've gotten Act I done (in around 175,000 words...*mindblasts self*) and I'm a single chapter into Act II. I'm making stuff up for the time skip, so who knows how long this one will be.

I've been working on a DA2 story for ages now, and still have yet to finish Act 2. I keep thinking of one more story line to tie up before I can go kick the Arishok's butt. Instead of breaking it into acts I've chosen to follow quest lines one at a time. Happily, the third act is pretty straightforward and is mostly comprised of a single main point. It's going much better now that I'm back into DA2 after another run through DA:O and Awakening.

Of course, I'm also working on my Cullen fic but he's getting no love, poor baby, just angst.

So... what do you fill the time skips up with?
