Doesn't it usually autosave, and when you to to start a new post prompt if you want to use the old one?

No, I was using the edit entry function.  It doesn't autosave that.

BALLS.  I'll just rewrite it.

Apparently adding the "Tragedy" tag isn't the path to having the most views. ;P I'm 3/5 finished with Heart of the Legend and I still have fewer views for it than my parodies, even while counting hits for all chapters.

For some reason, people love parodies.  My serious, not-so-fun stuff, the stuff I labor over for hours, doesn't get a lot of hits.  On the other hand, a Mass Effect "parody" thing that pretty much consists of me watching youtube vids to transcribe dialog right, and then spending about another 20-45 mins per chapter "reacting" to, gets hits out the wazoo, even when I haven't updated for a while. <_<

People love smut. And I am happy to give the people what they want.

Seriously, my dirty chapters get more hits than anything else.
Which makes me wonder how I'll manage to go through an act and a half without any in Leap.

So smut's the secret

I'm also thinking that my "parody" has a much bigger potential audience than most of the stuff I actually write.  Most of my reviewers on that piece seem to be male, so far as I can tell, and most of my author alerts point to male profiles.  It's my only ManShep piece.  Not too many men are interested in Thane/FemShep stuff, alas.  Or Atton, either, to my great dismay. :crying:

I wonder what the male/female author to fan breakdown is.

I think fanfic in general skews pretty heavily towards women, most of the time. I've got a surprising number of male readers, and a few female readers who've told me their boyfriends/husbands also read my fic, but I'd wager at least three quarters of my readers are women. Almost all the fics I read are by women. I'm betting almost everyone here in this thread is female, and probably eighty percent of People of Thedas, which is almost all fanfic writers, is female as well.

*nod*

I knew there was a reason I wrote that stuff.

I figured that's why my ME fanfic (which tends to be mostly smut or fluff) gets more hits than my super-depressing DA stuff.

But who doesn't like seeing characters who were once friends trying to murder each other? Eh? EH?

I never really thought about it, but looking through my favorite authors, and the stories I ahve favorited, almost all of the authors are women... I guess that puts me in teh minority. Fancy that.

I like depressing emotional stuff. Smut for the sake of smut isn't really my thing. But hey, what do I know?

I'm not female. I just predominately write female characters. *checks ff.net followers*

Well sh*t. Most of my readers are women.

I'm not huge on smut for smut's sake, but smut in context? Yes, please.
But I'm of the opinion that a little smut, or at least allusions to it, can sometimes be necessary. Humans are sexual creatures. That's why Sebastian and his "chaste marriage" is such an odd situation. Chastity isn't natural or normal, it flies in the face of a million years of evolution.
And I'm a lazy writer. Showing two characters who gradually go from just screwing to "making love" is an easy way to show relationship development. Showing how a character feels about their own sexuality, weather they're open or shy, forward or passive, gives insights into their overall character.

@Elysium:and maker bless you for it!

A silly idea of mine that was basically "Fenris + tiny mage kids = hilarity" has turned all epic and dark and *moralistic* on me. Now, before I can go any further, I need at least a working title, but nothing seems to work. I've been listening to random songs on my iTunes and browsed quotation pages.

My biggest problem here is that the title I choose inevitably shapes what kind of story it becomes and if I pick the wrong thing now I don't want to look up in 10,000 words only to realize that I should have called it "The Kids Are Alright" after all -_- Does anyone have any song recs that deal with, I don't know, family, freedom, self-expression, rebellion or breaking social convention for the greater good-ish?

This has always been my take on it. Sexuality is such a large part of our personalities, even when our relationships with a specific person aren't sexual. It really seems to me to be a very rational launch-pad for character exploration and development. So often my approach is to fling the characters into a sexual situation and then see how they react. What sort of development/circumstance does it take to make them willing to play instead of cringing in my mind saying, "Er, noooo." How do they react afterward? What nifty little discoveries do they make about themselves along the way.

Then again, I could just be trying to rationalize my own prurience.

And a romance-related question that's bugging me something fierce: what would romantic partners be referred to in a situation where they aren't/couldn't be married (or aren't there yet for whatever reason)? Lover seems the easiest solution, but I have something of an aversion to the term, and everything else I can think of makes Fenris brood. For direct address an elvish term of endearment works for Merrill, but Fenris is more likely to use a Tevinter term then an Elvish one. Or maybe a qunari one, considering his only other experience of affection was among the Fog Warriors... And either way that wouldn't solve what Varric would call them. Lovers just makes me think of that SNL skit and then I giggle instead of writing.

I usually go with "allusions to it" in my writing as I am uncomfortable with actually writing smut, so I tend to imply it and focus on emotions when writing such.  I think it is a holdover from my orthodox christian upbringing which leaves a sort of taboo on such content.  (Even though I now have a different understanding)

Or maybe it's just the fact that I tend to write sexually shy or reserved characters... or traumatized.  Well it works for me and that's what counts.

Lovers, partners... not much else to call it.

I was raised strict Catholic. Like, parochial school, mass twice a week, picture of the pope on the wall.
Every time I write something dirty it still feels like a rebellion against all that.
And rebellion is fun. :)

Even if I wanted to write smut, my characters would rather go kill people than have sex. It may be telling that my protagonists tend to be unsuitable for romance stories because they're too busy reducing the population.

Would it surprise anyone if I mentioned that I haven't found a pairing for Sophia (from HotL) yet?

So...I'm new here (obviously) but I've read some of the fic here and I'm blown away. You guys have some serious talent. It's kind of intimidating, honestly.

Anyway, I've got this annoying plot bunny that just won't leave me alone and thought I might as well post it here.

It's Ferelden, only a few months after the Hero has ended the fifth blight. A young noble by the name of Jace Sherrad doesn't want to get married off to a "suitable wife", so he grabs his mage friend Coron and runs for it. He's on his way to pick up his true love Eliza when...odd things happen.

I've got a basic outline written up, and I know all the characters I want to use. They're all new, cannon characters will only make brief cameos, which seems to be rare in DA fanfic. But meh. Hopefully I'll have a half decent first chapter up soon...ish.
