I'm honestly not too concerned about this kind of stuff. This is a new world, an opportunity to experience something new and exciting. I'll be role playing my character's choices with little metagaming. That said, with the descriptions of stats, and the stat requirements for abilities, it's easy to assume that two handers will deal more damage than dual wielding. Granted, this is still not certain seeing as we have no idea how dual wielding scales with what skill you have in it. It is safe to assume that at max dual wielding (Requires 36 dex) your off hand deals 100% of it's damage. So essentially, you miss out on about 32 strength (because you put it into dex instead). This may or may not be outweighed by the fact that 2 1 handers functioning at 100% will inherently deal more damage than 1 2 hander. It also depends on the availability of different stats through gear. If you can somehow get, say, 10 points of dex without losing any strength in your gear, you'll only be losing 22 strength spending level points on dex instead of str. This is different than, say, if you could only get 2 points of dex before sacrificing str in gear. So short answer, wait until the game is out in 5 days. ;)

Well, hard to say at this moment.... but its true that dual wield will be hard to obtain as warrior .. due to the high dex requirements.... think ill do 2hnder as warrior dwarf warrior, and try a dualwield warrior later on.. as female human , grace .. beauty death.... to keep it a bit in the rp style.

I don't care either. I will dual wield regardless.

The strongest weapons will likely be the two-handers, but dual-wielding will likely have an accuracy advantage and perhaps some debuff flourishes, so what is going to be more effective might be a trickier call. I can't imagine a rapier being more physically powerful than an equal level and quality 2h warmace.

What you also need to take into account is weapons are items. Items have stats. Dual wielders get to use two items, two handed weapon users only get one item. So, essentially, two handed weapon users miss out on an item slot that dual wielders and people who go sword/shield do get.

Not to mention that a dual wielder will have each weapon giving a different bonus. One might have +2 STR amd Poison, while the other has a +3 Defense and +2 CUN. As opposed to the two hander's +2 DMG and +3 To Hit

hey guys lets not forget that dex also gives bonus to attack speed. So a dual wield character will be cappable of high strike rates.

But since this thread is about dps(dmg per sec) i would assume that warrior class is capable of the best damage. again its a close call between 2-handed and dual-wield types. strength is gonna decide what weapons a DW warrior will use.

However, it isn't quite as percise as a good sword stroke.

If you're into RPG math then get the Dragon Age RPG ... chances are good, both systems use the same combat math ... ;)

Usually in the "powerful weapon" debate there are big weapons which you don't have to use with any finesse and there are small weapons which, when used properly, can do serious damage. I prefer the small weapons used properly end of the spectrum. Sorry, I'm a rogue at heart.

2-Handers with the proper talent specialization seem to be the runner up for the most powerful weapons in the game. It seems Two-handed Swords will have the most damage per hit. Traditional RPGs usually have Axes do higher damage but with a decreased probability to hit.

But according to Dragon Age Journeys it seems two-handed swords edge out a couple more damage a hit then Axes and the hit rate seems even. The only noticeable difference between the two besides looks and a few damage, swords being the higher, was the stats that tend to come with each. Axes seem much more likely to come with a +to critical chance.
Now all that being said I think later in the game Dual-weilding two full-sized weapons will equal the most damage with the proper Dual-weilding spec of course. The talent block seems to focus on many attacks and increased damage.

classic RPGs have handled the situation a few different ways to balance two-handed vs. dual-weilding, like for instance they would make a one-handed longsword deal 8 damage, and it's two-handed equivalent deal 16 damage. That way if you dual-weild or use a 2-hander the damage is roughly the same. If Bioware sticks with the DAJ formula though which is one-handers of the same tier seem to be 2/3s the strength of a two-hander, like for instance a tier 2 greataxe will clock in at 36 damage and it's one-handed axe version will be 24. Therefore dual-weilding two full-sized weapons in DAJ and possibly DA:O will see a damage increase over two-handers by 1/3 or 33%. That number will probably increase with the talents figured in.

But two-handers in Dragon Age play a much bigger role, they seem to be a great crowd control weapon, always stunning, slowwing, or knocking your enemies silly while managing to deal out powerful hits.
So early in the game Two-handers will rule the field, but by mid-to-late game expect a proficient dual-weilder to take the mantle.

But as stated above two-handers have their advantages as well, so it really comes down to a matter of preference, which is I'm sure what Bioware intended all along.Posted Image
