Hello, as most of you probably know already, the choices the player makes in the dialogue wheel tell the game what Hawke's 'personality' should be.
From what I could gather, the game apparently records your choices to define Hawke's general tone. Even Hawke's lines when you get a controlled companion to talk to him/her, will reflect his/her general personality.

I'm posting a wiki link here... dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Dialogue_wheel

For an example, this is what I got...
'Let's make Kirkwall a better place for everyone.'  ...From my Diplomatic/Helpful maleHawke warrior.
'Where are we going? How should I know? Do I look like the leader of this merry band of misfits?' ...From my Humorous/Hardened femHawke mage.

I think this is a very nice touch, and on my mage playthrough, I went for the Humorous personality. I'm still in Act 1 with the mage, but many conversations have turned quite different!

What worries me, is that I've read that Humorous is 'generally neutral' in earning you Friendship/Rivalry points, and I'm worried that following this path is going to keep companions neutral to me, not friendly or adversarial enough. This could prevent me from getting personal quests, and I might not earn enough points to keep the companions in the party when the tough choices present themselves.

I'm thinking about dropping the humour, though I like it, and go back to Diplomatic/Helpful, at least when dealing with the companions.

What's your experience with the matter? Suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance !

I've done the same thing. My first Hawke was a very noble, kind, diplomatic rogue. My second (and favorite) is a sarcastic mage. I love how the personality changes depending on your choices. That was a brilliant move, BioWare.

I've just started Act III with her. As far as the rival/ friend points go...it depends on which companion. I found that Isabela is by far and away the easiest to friend when going with the middle option. Seriously, she and my Hawke are BFFs or something. Fenris is a 100% rival but I made it a point to bring him along on quests that would make him angry (rivalmance is so, so good). Varric...I don't think it's possible to not make him a friend. If my Hawke were a boy...they'd have a bromance. Those are the three I use most often...the others are more varied.

Aveline leans towards the friendly side of neutral. Anders is in the friend zone but not by a whole lot. Merrill...is fairly neutral, last time I checked. Sebastian leans towards the rival side of neutral.

I think that's all of them. So it's not impossible. You just have to pay more attention. It's a big plus if you like bringing Isabela along...because she just fits perfectly.

I was able to max friendship with Aveline, Varric, Fenris, Sebastian and Anders using humorous/hardened and a tiny bit of diplomatic. I didn't take Merrill and Isabela along enough to get them anywhere.

im only towards the end of act1 but it seems like who you choose to help or the resolution of a quest affects the friendship rating way more than just being a jerk in your dialog choices or whatever

The dialog system is fubar. There is no nuance or well scripted conversation trees. Its retarded in and of it self.

Act of Mercy has you asking what is a phylactery and who is Meredith when you already have to go through a plot quest where the main character (you) describe what a phylactery is and someone informs you of who Meredith is at the start of your days in Kirkwall. Who ever wrote this crap should be strung up by his short hairs and flogged.

did you ever play FFXIII lol? i think they explained the same thing in that game for about 75% of it, that was horrible.

I dont have too much beef with repeating stuff like you mention because over the course of a long game you can forget stuff like that. especially if you like to use herbal performance enhancers like I do hahah
