Rule #1 of navigating the internet: forums (gaming or restaurant or other products) are populated by complainers as the people that enjoy something are off enjoying it.  People naturally go out of their way to complain (ask anyone in a customer service oriented job) but not to compliment. Forums and user reviews always skew to the negative and are never an accurate cross section of the population. Draw your own conclusions or find a particular reviewer you generally agree with and stick to using that person as your guide.

You know what guys? In the future i won't even look at "official" forums anymore before i tried the game myself. Thats a lesson i really, really learned here. You people had almost in all seriousness convinced me that DA 2 would be a bad game and a disgrace to the franchise. I even made (totally embarassing) nerdrage-threads myself here, whining that i would cancel my preorder.

Well i did exactly that and now after having played that game for almost 50h (still in act 2) I just have to say that i'm playing a masterpiece, nothing less and most things i read here where utter lies. 15 Hours of Gameplay? Yeah if you skip everything incl. every cutscene and dialogue, ignore most of the sidequest, dont explore at all, copy&paste cookie cutter builds from the interwebs and play on "casual". Then, maybe, yes. Worse graphics? You gotta be kidding me. "Dumped down hack&slash" gameplay? This is one that really pisses me off because DA 2 is MORE complex and more refined than DA:O in every relevant aspect of the battleengine. "Dumbed down"? Yeah right, did you even play the game? Or DA:O for that matter?

Would more dungeons and more variety made the game better? Well, probably yes. But u know what? I don't care. Because Bioware did what they do best: STORYDRIVEN RPGs with Characters you won't forget, Dialogues that don't make you cringe 90% of the time and a rock solid battleengine.

If i want to explore vast open landscapes or indulge myself in Item-Crazyness i will reopen the many MMO-Accounts that i have, i really don't need Offline RPGs for that, in fact: i don't want them too deliver "vast worlds" anymore, that's a thing of the past (and yes i include Bethesda games that look good but are completely devoid of any meaningful content, making up for it with long traveling times and no narrative to speak off). Bioware did the exact right thing in the age of MMOs: Refining the essence of what MMOs can't do into a glorious offlinegame which is EPIC in every sense of the word and much more polished than DA:O (which i loved and played for 200+ hours).

I am an RPG-Veteran who played almost everything since the days of "The Bard's Tale" on my C-64. Offline RPGs or MMORPGs, japanese or western, it doesn't matter i'm a sucker for this genre. My Top 10 of all time would include games like Deus Ex, Planescape Torment, Dark Age of Camelot, Shin Megami Tensai-Series and Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 as well es Final Fantasy X, Valkyrie Profile, Guild Wars and, yes, WoW.

So to every gamer on the fence about this game: do yourself a favour and try it.

Also can someone explain to me how people somehow get 30+ hours of gameplay? Do you sit around and look at walls or something?

I hit 40 on my first playthrough. Didn't have trouble with combat, didn't sit and read codex entries. I just explored and found every sidequest and item I could.

I don't feel like I burned up much more than an hour or so doing anything that wasn't gameplay related, though.

Well it´s understandable.

You can spend a great deal of time to think about what could be improved, reasons why it´s bad etc... but there´s only so many letters you can spend on "Epic game loved it!!!!"

50 hours? HAHAHA the person who said you were on crack was dead wrong. You must be on temazepam if you took 50 hours. I took my time and played slowly through absolutely everything and came to 26 hours by the end.

Why, I can bet you played on Easy or Normal difficulty. Even Hard is pretty easy without FF.

I'm very early in Act 2 and it's marking 34 hours. Let's discount some 2 hours I watched a cool movie on the telly and the game was running... 32 hours and still a lot more to go. Should go faster now that I ain't killing my whole party with my cleave/claymore enhanced whirlwind! =)

But a good measure for comparison, at least for Act 1, is how much gold have you gathered total? I have easily topped 120 sovereigns, from which I spent around some 75 in elixires, tomes, a few items and potions, lots of them. I had 45g when there was nothing else to do but to get a loan for another extra 50 g.

And this is another DA:O feature they stripped from the game and was a cool one. The Statistics for the party, party members, etc. Almost each of my DA:O runs (around 20 total) took me 80-100 hours and it was fun keeping my Warden with zero injuries, knowing what's the hardest kill of everyone and how much gold they have gathered in a playthrough, always in NM, always with over 3,000 sovereigns in the end. Always in Nightmare.

I agree game is 22 hours most I think and I take my time. As for OP I played more MMO's and RPGs than you! this game is a let down from first DA, good game not great. I hope they make an expansion soon so I can get a real ending.

So I'm guessing the OP no longer stands for the views expressed in this thread? I'll give him this - when he stands for something, he stands for it 100%. No middle ground here... :P

Exactly. I am really embarrassed about the cited  threat because it was based on a review from a site that i certainly won't visit again in the future. I thought that it would be nice to state that i changed my mind completely after having played the game. Sure it is embarassing for me, but i don't want Bioware to think that their game is garbage. It has it's flaws but what it does right, it does REALLY right. And the flaws it has a terribly overblown here in the forums.

I my opinion what happened is this: Right now they have three big budget title in the making. One (ME 3) is pretty sure to be a tremendous success but has to have very high budget to surpass part 2 in every aspect. Than there is their Star Wars MMO which is a high risk endeavour and i bet a nightmare when it comes to budget. I am afraid that they had to cut corners with Dragon Age 2 budgetwise in this situation but i really think they did the very best they could under these cirumstances.

This is why I think you have infinitely more integrity than most posters here and I mean that 100%!

Yeah I agree the game gets a lot of harsh reviews. Sure it's not Origins or Baldur's Gate 2 but it's still a decent game and I won't hate it just because it's changed a little, mind you maybe some of the harsh reception that DA2 got will make Bioware make Dragon Age 3 even better.

Haha you must feel REALLY stupid. That'll teach you a lesson.

P.S. I think DA2 is a disappointment but I, unlike you, came to that conclusion by spending 50,-eur and playing it myself. I think you should be happy, you went into the game with LOW expectations which are the best way to be positively surprised. Me, I went in with blind faith and came out sad and disappointed. Oh well.

Its simple. The reason why i said he was a troll is because how his entire topic is put up. And i still dont get how people get that much gameplay time? I got 25-27 or so hours or around 27 hours on nightmare. I did not skip any dialog and i missed out on a few quests...

Have you played on normal skipping about everything? You want a screenshot of my Post Campaign Save to satisfy your disbelief?

THIS was one of the things I really missed to be honest, but yet I've loved Dragon Age 2, even if it's NOT Origins 2, it has his meaning and it delivers a great story!

I am loving this game. I am only barely into act 2 and I am at around 30 hours, so not sure how anyone finishes in less than 30 without ignoring something. Agree 100% with OP.

I just finished the game and I loved it! My total play time was 43 hours and I ended the game at level 23 (I didn't read any codexes or leave the game running while I was away, all content...). Lots of "WTF" and "OMG" moments, so that's definitely a good thing. :D

My only complaint was the copy-pasted dungeons.

@The OP:
I do agree that DA2 has great merits as a role-playing game. Despite one very serious flaw (the labeling of the dialogue wheel), you do have more roleplaying opportunities here than in DAO, ME1 and ME2. Character interaction is better than in any other Bioware game so far.

The combat, however, sucks. I usually play for the story and I'm tolerant of suboptimal combat. Well-stages combat scenes and good combat mechanics and visuals are a nice bonus but not really essential for me. DA2's is really, really bad. This is the first game in years where I disliked combat so much that it detracted from the enjoyment of the game as whole.

Personally, I've been completely bewildered by the amount of hate for DA2 on these boards. I prefer DA2 to Origins. DA2 to me is basically Origins with a more interesting and unique story, better written companions with stronger ties to the main plot, and with all the tedious stuff from Origins taken away.

There's been some criticism I agree with: re-used maps, less interesting combat and some voice acting that I'm not so keen on. But overall the positives far outweigh the negatives IMO.

I like this game alot...but I can fully accept the criticism about recycled areas, that is a genuine complaint.

But....when people start telling lies and pretending the game only lasts 20-30 hours, then that's just unacceptable. I do every quest in the game, but don't spend hours on builds or changing gear around. On normal difficulty I am at 30 hours in and maybe 1/4 of the way into Act 2.

So please, no more lying about completing it in 20 hours, doing everything and taking time exploring etc, because it's just not true

Sidequesting, exploring, checking back if there is a new quest, not playing on Casual, reading some codex, it was easily 56 hours on my first playthrough. Which means -now that I know where to gather and when to look for quests- an average of 40-45 hours for me per playthroughs.
