Since I was carrying a bow that Hawke could equip I decided to use that as well. The thing is my DW Hawke doesn't actually haven't any points in Archery (since all her points are in Dual Weapons) so when I equiped the bow and had her attack (shoot) the Dragon, she ran forward with the bow in one hand and a generic sword in the other and just engaged it in melee combat. Do you have to have a point in Archery to actually use a bow in combat (rather than merely equipping it) or is this a Tactics thing or something?
On a similar point, whenever I wanted Varric to use his Rhyming Triplet Volley/Hail of Arrows attack rather than doing so from a distance he would run up under the Dragon and then fire. I guess it's possible that both these 'glitches' were because I had the Dragon 'wedged' in the doorway (head in the room/body (mostly) out) and the AI got confused or something, but I'm probably just doing something wrong. (Likewise in the Ancient Rock Wraith battle even when I engaged the Hold feature to stop the party wandering into the 'nuclear blast' AOE I couldn't 'hold' the entire party at the same time and kept having to micro-manage them walking forwards and backwards behind the pillars to stop them running into the AOE to attack the ARW.
Part of the reason for asking this is I'm thinking I might have to re-run the entire Deep Roads Expedition section again because I found I'd missed the Last Descent Gloves when I did the Long Way Home quest and I'm wondering if there's any point reloading from just before Bartrand starts the expedition and going and find them so I have the complete armor set at the start of Act Two (which is where I am now).
ETA: In the end I went back for the Gauntlets and then re-ran the DRE quest with Fenris swapped out for Aveline, who was probably a better tank in the final analysis.
