I decided to start up this game after many years and play through it again.

I currently have a 6 member party - I just rushed to get a few members I knew I really wanted. It consists of the following members, also listing my weapon intentions:

1. Halfling Swashbuckler - Celestial Fury +3/Belm +2/Scarlet Ninja-To +3/The Answerer +4/Spectral Brand +5/Angurvadal +5/Whatever
2. Minsc - Flail of Ages +6/Crom Fayer and Mace of Disruption +2 against undead
3. Mazzy - Gesen/Darkfire Bow and Foebane +5/Kundane +2/Belm +2
4. Keldorn - Carsomyr +6
5. Viconia - Sling of Seeking +2/Shield of Harmony +2
6. Jaheira - Don't really plan on keeping her

Right now the party is fighter heavy. What mage should I get? Imoen? Edwin? Jan? Will Edwin ever leave if I keep Viconia in the party? I don't want to have any "evil" problems basically. I could rush to get imoen.

It's kind of dumb now that I look back on it - you have to write those mage scrolls rather than just get them automatically as you level like clerics. I wish the game did that. It's basically forcing me to make this decision early because there is only a limited number of scrolls in the game and I don't want to waste them on a mage I don't plan on using. :(

Any of the "full" mages (Edwin, Nalia, Imoen) are going to be more than enough. Obviously Edwin is the most powerful as he gets the extra spells not only from being a Conjurer but also because of his unique magic item. From your list above, Edwin will have a conflict with some of the party members (since this is the no spoiler forum I won't say who), but you can use the G3 Tweakpack to eliminate party squabbles if you want.

In SoA vanilla (no difficulty enhancing mods), pretty much any party is good enough to beat the game.

In general, you're going to find once you get to ToB, Minsc and Keldorn getting beat up a lot as your front-line fighters since they have nothing to really protect themselves. I'd plan on stocking up on as many Stoneskin/Mirror Image/PfMW scrolls for your PC starting in SoA as early as possible. Also, I'd recommend Minsc's off-hand weapon be either Kundane/Belm for normal situations and then use the Defender of Easthaven (in combination with Hardiness) for those tough fights. Give either him or Keldorn Ilbratha, not to use, just to hold, so they can activate the Mirror Image.

Also, there's plenty of ways to increase strength when you need outside of taking up his offhand slot with CF when there are much better offhand options for tougher fights.

For example, looking at Crom Faeyr vs Belm + fire giant strength belt with Flail of Ages +4 as main weapon for Minsc.

Flail of Ages +4 with CF offhand gives 1d6 + 5 damage + 4 elemental + 3 specialization + strength. He will get 5/2 attacks per round with Fail and an extra attack with CF. with 1d6 = 3.5 dmg average, you're looking at 29.5 damage per hit with FoA (3.5 + 5 +4 +3 +14) and 2d4 +3 + 3 spec + strength, that's 5+3+3+14=25 dmg per hit with CF. Over 2 rounds thats 5 attacks with FoA and 2 with Cf for a total of 197.5 dmg per every 2 rounds.

for Belm offhand and the fire giant belt with 22 str (+ 10 damage) you get ave damage for FoA of 25.5 and belm of 19.5, but you get 7/2 attacks per round with FoA and 1 each round with belm, so the 2 round total is 217.5 dmg per 2 rounds.

That's in a non-hasted, non-whirlwind regular fight, not counting for critical hits nor misses when rolling a 1 (assumes at that point of TOB you are hitting pretty much everything except critical misses).

Other fights, the extra 20% dmg reduction from DoE will come in more useful than the extra strength.

Not that this argument is exhaustive, but just a reminder that CF is not the end all be all of off-hand weapons since there are lots of ways to increase strength throughout the game.

Part of my reason for using the crom fayer on him was because I wanted the belts for viconia (make her sling hit hard) and mazzy (so she can end up doing good damage with foebane). If there are even more belts, maybe I can do as you suggested, but I won't squabble over 25 damage per 2 rounds :) It's good to know though.

I think I might have enough extra attacking weapons for minsc to use one though. I will have Belm, Kundane and the Scarlet Ninja-To... so once I get them all, I'm sure I'll have enough for make my party happy.

Oh, I guess I'll just rush and do spellhold to get imoen then... do all the side quests after. Or is nalia fine? I can't remember... my memory is saying she sucks, but if there's essentially no difference, then I guess I can get nalia.

I just looked at the stats and I'm going to use nalia. That way I can just enjoy the game and not rush anything. I already played as imoen years ago, so no biggy. That works.

If you're not worried about power-gaming, then either one is fine. If you are, use the G3 Tweakpack Happy Patch and take Edwin. In terms of the strength items, for Viconia, between Draw Upon Holy Might, Holy Power, and I can't remember the 5th level ones, she might not need a permanent one.

For the permanent ones you've got:

Belt hill giant str (19)
gauntlets of ogre power (18/00)
belt of frost giant strength (21)/crom faeyr
belt of fire giant strength (22)

If Keldorn is meleeing, you'll want one for him for sure, same with mazzy (there's a big difference between 16 or 17 strength and 18/00 or better, esp with multiple attacks). Adding strength to Viconia's 1 attack per round with a sling probably isn't the best use for a strength item unless you've really got them to spare (e.g. even adding a couple of points of damage to Minsc's 3.5 attacks per round is better than adding 6-7 points of damage to Viconia's one weak attack). I find once I hit mid-game, i can spare an extra level 2 mage spell for Strength, which raises to 18/50 for 1 hour/level (so it lasts forever as a buff). I'd worry more about viconia's strength for wearing though than using weapons.

I'd probably swap jaheira for Imoen or nalia - edwin i think doesn't get on with keldorn.

A good mage will help a lot - especially the cool abilities.

If you don;t like learnign spells from scrolls - you could try a sorcerer sometime - they are cool as they cast so many spells from a limited selection, and in many places they are epic. Try lower resistance against a golem then spammed magic missile - tip.

Haha good on ya for playing BG2 again, I did that last year after many years..

Good party choice as well, except that I would replace Keldorn Firecam with Saverok in TOB, and Jaheira with a mage such as Edwin.

This was my party the last time I played:

Human Paladin (Cavalier, so I can use the holy avenger)
Minsc (can't remember what weapon he was using.. possibly two weapon style with flail of ages in one hand and Crom Faeyr in the other)
Saverok (Massive weapon known as Ravager)
Sarelith (NPC mod download, it was good)
Aeire (for mage and cleric)
Solaufien (NPC mod download, he is a mage/fighter)

1. charname
2. imoen            crimson dart                         3
3. minsc            azure edge -> k'logorath     3
4. aerie              sling of everard                     1
5. mazzy            gesen bow                             4
6. valygar          firetooth dagger                     4

this party is completely ammo independent. if you have ammo, great, save it for special occasions. otherwise, you'll be fine without.

imoen/nalia dualed to mage from thief lets her wear the amulet of the master harper (immune to silence and +3 AC). also, she can wear the aslyferund +5 chain mail, which does NOT disable her spell casting. this is great for her armor class, just in case. her weapon is the crimson dart because darts set your attacks to 3. this is as high as i could get it since being a mage limits her attacks per round. obviously she casts and fills the down time with ranged attacks.

azure edge is bugged, doing 3d6 instead of the 1d6 damage. also the ability to instakill undead is good too.

aerie/viconia is usually casting, so the sling is just gravy. however, she can load up on different ammo and help with creatures that require +5.

mazzy and valygar both use elemental damage on weapons. both have attacks at 4 per round (after specializing in their respective weapons). the elemental damage basically disrupts mages. this means that with haste, whirlwind is not as beneficial as critical strikes. obviously, you like keldorn for his infinite dispel. however, i find that hitting them with protections via elemental damage is far more useful than dispelling what they have.

the front line is far too dangerous on insane for party members. my main char uses summons exclusively to engage enemies, so nobody is in front. furthermore most of the weapons can be found early game so you don't need to buy intermediate transition weapons.
