Okay, seriously - over on the dragon age 2 forums, lots of people are saying "DA2 is the worst bioware game ever!" Now I don't agree, and a lot of other people are arguing against that, but that isn't the point of this thread. I've seen a lot of posters really troubling me, when they say "Lol, DA2 wasn't the worst. Jade Empire is!"

....what?

I heard that and was honestly shocked. I remember when Jade Empire came out, how excited I was. How voraciously I consumed the content in the game, playing through as Radiant Jen Zi (still my favorite spirit monk, and the one I use for every nostalgia playthrough), then as furious ming, then as every other spirit monk, exploring every possible path, romancing every possible party member, acquiring and mastering every fighting style across all my playthroughs.

I always knew that I loved Jade Empire more than the average fan. My love for it is probably on the level of most of the people who still post on this tired 'Jade Empire' corner of the Bioware social network, and I have to give the modders props for loving it more than I do, enough to actually improve it and make it better.

Still, I'm getting on a tanget here. The point is that I love this game, and consider it one of my favorite games of all time. HOW is it that so many people, and in fact so many BIOWARE fans, hate the game? This honestly boggles my mind.

There are some things that are staples in every Bioware game, such as interesting companions, a riveting plot, and side quests with a surprising amount of depth and consequence to them. In all these categories, I feel that Jade Empire shines above all other Bioware games. Was there a single companion in this game that wasn't completely loveable? Was there anyone among us who didn't totally love the story, which combined classic kung-fu movie tropes, like a powerful, sagely master and a mysterious fighting style, with some surprisingly modern elements (such as the golemns and the flying machine?) And of all the sidequests, I think the only ones I really don't enjoy are the ones in the graveyard of the imperial city. Everything else is STILL interesting, after all these years and all these playthroughs.

I dunno. It really boils my blood that these people keep ragging on Jade Empire, as if it's some piece of trash. Anyone else agree?

I don't understand people speaking ill of this game, either. Though I'm one of those fans who enjoyed my DA2 playthrough, so I doubt I could find much in common with their gaming experience. I guess it's easy to forget JE's contribution to bioware history for some. I admit, the game had its flaws (such as inventory management which was essentially absent all together in favor of the impressive pre-drawn cutscenes)... but for the time it was released (and initially being Xbox exclusive) it was an impressive gem. The romance story led to that awesome kiss scene (very innocent and storybook like)... which paved the way for the even more intimate scenes in games like ME. Over all, this game was pretty exceptional.

I think alot of it is people playing as of late and having comparisons to ME or DA. JE is my favorite BioWare game also but the graphics, depth of rpg capabilities, etc are held to 2005 technology. I think that if JE was released with todays graphics and the power of ME it would be very highly rated.

We are all witnessing how much hate DA2 is receiving by Bioware streamlining it and making it more action RPG like. So its no wonder Jade Empire was/is being hated too, as being an accessible, responsive action RPG is what it's all about. JE is the king of streamlining.

People complain about JE's lack of inventory, customization, etc etc as you would expect from a typical Bioware game. What I think people's expectations should have been was a new, excellent, fun game from Bioware, not just one that stuck to the typical formula.

But I personally think Bioware made a good move, it was a real symbol of how Bioware is always evolving their games and trying new things. But some people just hate change I guess.

And have you seen JE's ratings?? Wow it seems those critics appreciated the game for what it was rather than bashing it for a missed opportunity as an Asian themed Baldur's Gate.

I loved Jade Empire enough to buy it twice because my other game disc stopped working. It's a true action RPG that shows how BW can dwell into any culture and captivate the minds of their faithful fans, but DA2 is a different story because of the fact that the series didn't start out as an action RPG, and it felt completely dumbed down and slopped together. Jade Empire didn't at least.

I've lost my original copy. So I bought it on xbl, replayed it. Loved it. One of the best games. Would love for a sequel.

I too liked Jade Empire! The only bits I didn't like was the arcade shooting bits in the travel, but other than that I liked it! I too would like to see a return to Jade Empire!

The shooting bits were no worse than the scanning "mini-game" that ME2 had. Then again, I was always amused by the top-down air shooters.

I've recently started replaying JE and formulating some thoughts about it and Bioware RPGs given the attempted consolization of DA2. I'll probably post it in the DA2 forums in a couple weeks or so.

what they criticized is JE's simplification and lack of customization. but other than that it's a brilliant game

Jade Empire has it's flaws, but it's saved by an excellent story, well written and likeable characters, a decent degree of replay value and basically being a hell of a lot of fun
it's rather dated now, both in terms of graphics and gameplay, but still a game I'd recommend

Because most people seem incapable of judging a game on whether it is fun, enthralling, makes you want to finish, makes you want to play it again, etc. They just look to see if it's the same as the previous game but with shinier graphics; if not, it must suck.

There is a part of this. There is also a part where people can't seems to accept that it's not because they don't like a game that it sucks.

Personally, I loved Jade Empire and I want a Jade Empire 2.

Jade Empire is the best BioWare game I have played to date. It has all the RPG elements you need, choices that have an impact on the story like any other BioWare game, the combat is engaging (I think it catches a lot of flack due to the more action based approach), one of the best stories BioWare has ever told with lush environments and some of the best locations seen in a video game ever, and you get cons of compaions along the way (if I remember correctly).

I'm actually saddened BioWare didn't continue Jade Empire and at least make a next-gen version that was designed from ground up for next-gen systems (as well as a PC port) with a continuing story.

I know they did a PC port of Jade Empire for PC with improved graphics, but I wanted to see a new one built from ground up with a next-gen engine (Unreal Engine 3 powered Jade Empire would rock my socks).

Jade Empire is a very good game however the one abiding memory I have of it was all the bugs that never got fixed in it a lot of which could be very game breaking I have the collecters edition and having a think about it will probably install it and go for another playthrough but the comparison most people are making in reference to DA2 I would think is more of the factor that bugwise it is worse than DA2 is.

In regards to the pc port version I have while it may have better graphics the one thing that lets it down is the cutscenes were not upscaled as iirc they had destroyed the original copies of them and couldn't rejig them for the pc version was a shame as it detracted a fair bit from the cutscenes impact.

Playing Jade Empire for the first time is one of my fondest gaming memories. I was Furious Ming, basically living out all of my childhood kung-fu fantasies. It's a phenomenal game, though I suppose if one doesn't love martial arts films to a certain extent one might not enjoy it as much.

I enjoyed JE greatly when I played it for the first time a few years back and still like it enough to occasionally consider installing the SE for PC again. It had its flaws and feels far more action oriented than other BioWare games, but that didn't bother me at all while playing. The story and Asian setting are fantastic and memorable, and that along with the interesting characters is enough for me.

JE was my first Bioware game. Loved it to bits and actually just started replaying it. Am having a blast years later, haha. With that said, I did view it as bit of weak link in the scope of the Bioware games that I did play.
It was fantastic but it was also somewhat simplistic.

Jade Empire was freaking amazing.

Graphics were insane for a normal XBOX game also. Love love love that game.

I was a later comer to the game. Jade Empire's one of the few games I'm able to play when I'm having a very bad carpal tunnel day, so for that alone it will rank up there at the top.

I also found it incredibly refreshing that it was based mostly in Chinese mythology because for how long I've been playing video games, I can honestly say I am tired of all the Japan based games and the bishies. To me it's like having the same thing for lunch and dinner for months on end. Yeah, it's food, but damn you're more than ready for something different on the plate.

I do wish Bioware eventually returns to the JEverse or even branches out into some of the other Asian mythologies.

The best was someone that placed Jade Empire last of all BioWare games, the reason? he opened the manual and found the game so horrible, so he never even played it.

Personally I placed JE first ~ and I wasn't alone, so oh well ~ its not all negative over there.

Yeah I don't understand it either. I think some of those people never even played it. JE was a great game, I loved the universe and art style. It is definitely in my top 5 original Xbox games.

I enjoyed JE way back when. To be honest, it may be my least favorite Bioware rpg but I still prefer it to 90% of the rpgs out there (I'm looking at you New Vegas). I thought it was an interesting concept and quite fun while it lasted. I wasn't a fan of the combat, or rather the repetetive combat animations but I still played through JE twice.

My suggestion op, take what you read on these forums with a proverbial grain of salt. Dragon Age is the new punching bag for the "WAAAAHHH, THIS ISN'T LIKE BALDUR'S GATE!!!!" crowd. They all have short memories since I remember the same complaints being leveled at DAO. Just ignore it. JE and KOTOR are the poster children for Bioware's new rpg style that started in the early 2000's. I enjoy the new style (not so new anymore but you get what I mean). The fanatics in those forums will say anything to bash DA 2 (and ME 2 for that matter).

You enjoyed JE and from the sound of it, you still enjoy it. Good. Keep playing it and forget the haters. And I hope you're happy op, now I feel like playing JE again!

Most of the arguments over at the DA2 forums are not about that it's not DA:O2, rather that some feel that its rushed, and too streamlined.

For example JE have tons and tons of more choices and decisions, and if people are reluctant to call JE a cRPG, they shouldn't dare to call DA2 one.

Some people are stupid. That's why. I can't even comprehend why people would rag on Jade Empire more than DA2. Though it was a twinge buggy and different from other Bioware games in regards to combat, Jade Empire was good because it didn't pretend to be the successor of anything, it was a new idea set in its own universe and rules, all the while retaining aspects of Bioware games that we love.

Well, I think the main reason why people trash Jade Empire mainly boils down to:

1. Action RPG vs. AD&D RPG
Jade Empire's battle system is fast and responsive but it's not turn-based. So it plays a lot more like Diablo 2. Obviously, the removal of the standard inventory items pushes it along the road of ARPG. For those used to BG2 or DAO, this is obviously a step back. Furthermore, it was designed for the console from the start just like DA2 which makes the controls slightly awkward for the PC.

2. Chinese Setting
Whilst I loved this as I'm Chinese, I guess there's a disconnect for Western/European gamers when playing in this setting. This is pretty normal. That's why most Western gamers would prefer a Total War in a Roman setting as compared to say Japan or China. We tend to like what we're most familiar with.

Having said that, I really loved Jade Empire. Hope they'll revisit the franchise again someday. Like KOTOR, choosing the Evil option was quite shocking esp. the reaction from the Water Dragon. Some of the quests were pretty cool as well... too bad the ending was a bit rushed.
