You should take a good look at the options. It's there. I have helmets equipped but invisible in DA2.

There's a toggle for this already. Go into the main menu, I think it's in interface or gameplay option.

Maybe I am wrong, but don't you already have that ability in DA2? It's under "interface" or "visuals" or something in the options menu. "Hide helmet"
