I am trying to get to the top and light the beacon. The first couple times I tried fighting my way up but with one NPC and two tower guards I got overwhelmed early.  The next time I just sprinted through the opponents looking for stairs and my droogs waded through and caught up to me. I got to a door about 3 flights up but it wouldn't open for me.and my group made a stand there until we got carved up.

In BG this would have been a time for mass invisibility or haste. I don't  have access to useful magic ike that.

So was I at the right door, and if so, why wouldn't it open?

Was the mad dash the proper technique or should I have played it slow and methodically slashed my way up the tower? I assumed there was no time for the patient approach and that the supply of enemy goons would be endless. Any ideas?

So I did a hit and run in the tower courtyard going outside to heal up a couple of times, and eventually carved up all the outside opponents. The game does not appear to penalize for for such delays, even though I think the narrative dialogue earlier says you only have an hour.

Once through into the tower itself the same tactic doesn't work because the game won't let you exit the tower "uncleared" and you can't get out of combat mode with enemies so close, so the players don't recharge when you are disengaged.

My Mage seems pretty useless at this stage as he has no true hold person spells and his low level magical attacks don't seem to do any more damage than the enemy melee weapons. Also the absence of a ranged attack for Allistair means he and one of the two Tower Guard droogs get their asses kicked while sprinting into an arrow barrage in the second tower room. I was able to lure a few of the enemy into the Tower intry room and dice them up, but the higher level mage/shaman type and the three archers don't want to follow.
