I really like the way Bioware implemented the romance for Merrill with Hardass Hawke over Hippie Hawke. The shattering of the mirror and balancing Hawke's realism with Merrill's idealism, is very well written, and saves Merrill (can the clan) from herself because of the helpful balance.

Merrill Rivalmance - the way the game is meant to be played.

I know. :(

When she looks at you with those big green eyes of hers... it's hard to say 'no.' :crying: Even when you have to.

Wait you can romance someone as a rival/? Wow didn't think that was possible. May need to give that a try next go around.

Good thing I convinced her (and myself) what happened to the clan was all the keepers fault :P

What we do for love. I killed the clan just for her.

Couple question: To pursue a rivalry romance you need to keep the flirting going and raise as much rivalry point as possible right?

When does it trigger the mirror smashing? What are the conditions?

Thanks

Pft I clearly have no heart I had no problem turning her into a rival. Demon dealing never ends well, and at times to help someone you have to be harsh. Coddeling them may make them feel better, but it won't solve the problem at hand.

A threat to hurt Merrill is my Hawke's berserk button.

Leto Hawke only has two rules..

1. Don't mess with Merrill!

2. Don't mess with my sister!

I believe she smashed it near the end of act 2, and I wasn't in a romance with her, just rivalry.

I wish it was easier to be nice to her, but completely unforgiving about her blood magic, I don't like that my good character couldn't lay down the guilt trips as much without getting rivalry points.

They do, if you tell them it's all your fault. Telling them the truth "the keeper got in our way, ****ed up, and now she's dead", they don't take that very kindly.

Maybe just me but...

Maxed her friendship and locked it down, then still made the hard choices for her (No Merrill, no. You can't have the pointy elven thingy to fix the other elven thingy. Also; we're going to side with the Templars. Love you.)... no rivalry, just understaaanding. And cute romance. The cuttest. Not my intention to even manipulate things this way - wasn't trying to lock her friendship even.. just sorta happened on its own.

Anyhow, in conclusion;
True friends tell you when you're being an idiot. .... when not risking rivalry points.

So.... you've set her straight while still on the friendship path? I also didn't get any Rivalry points after maxing the friendship bar. Maybe a bug?

BTW: Engrish be not my native language, so not sure if the 'straight' comment was worded correctly.Posted Image

That would be my plan as well (maxed out her friendly and just asked her to move in with me). I did give her the arulin'holm, but for now what she's doing isn't so bad (restoring her people's lost heritage is a noble goal).

Of course, I did glimpse some spoilers and something tells me I'll oppose her plans later on, which as you said is what true friends would do.

That said, this underscores my one complaint with the friendship/rivalry system... it seems very difficult to reach high rovalry status without being a total bastard towards a companion. Meaning if I am RPing a good/diplomatic character, I will usually end up wobbling between rivalry and friendship even though I dissagree with the core tenets of the character (for example, right now Fenris is mostly a friend, even though we disagree on mages).

I actually have Merrill at max rivalry without being a b*st*rd. I can't remember where I got the first 25, but refusing to give her the tool really makes her mad. From then on, I chose the olive branch responses and still received rivalry points. She thinks I'm trying to coddle her , "Just like the keeper". I'm just trying to keep her safe is all. I just started act 3. So, I don't know what to expect next.

Man.... now reading this I feel that I'm the most spineless person ever....

I didn't kill Anders, can't do it without a healer (And I just can't bring myself to kill him after romancing him and everything).

I let Merrill run loose with her magic mirror, even I didn't agree to what she's doing. I feel that she should be focusing on what's happening now with her people, instead of some old dangerous mirror. And in the end, I take the blame and Mirrell hates me (add 10 rivalry if you take the blame).

And Isabella abandoned me in Act 2.

And I let Fenris kill his sister...

..... I need to be firm next time!

Think of It this way......Your screwing her any way and If you care for her, you would not want her to be possesed by a demon. Also, you don't have to be mean to her, just don't give her the knife.

Wait, you feel bad for letting him kill his sister for selling him out....for power. I can understand if she was forced but she did it for power. She's worst than Alister's sister.
