The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Dragon Age 2 has zero chance
Shame on you for not mentioning Deus Ex Human Revolution. It's pretty much a shoe-in.

DA2 is a great game, but 8/10 =/= GOTY material.

No, Skyrim will take it.
Oblivion would similarly annihilate DA:O.
Nothing wrong with Bioware games, but Bethesda games have a more universal appeal.
I believe Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has a chance...a chance...at being better than Skyrim. Portal 2 is going to be right there as well. Valve has refined that...and then refined it again, giving quadrupling game time and adding new features.
Bethesda's rigid and stiff combat, along with dull character's and dialogue presentation, is unpopular among many gamers. It's a solid candidate, though.
Plus...don't forget Mass Effect 3

Yet so many people like the formula that the Elder Scrolls games have, and they want it to stay that way.
I've said it lots of times - Story alone does not determine the quality of a game.

There's less of a chance that Bethesda will be so foolish as to tarnish the name of their signature property, though -- they've taken the years to invest in the growth of their IP, and it looks set to move the genre forward and advance their reputation once again.
That investment of time is what a big RPG needs, and it does make money -- a lot of money -- when it's done right and when you have the attention of an audience -- as Dragon Age did after Origins.
By the same token, Deus Ex had a rushed, sloppy sequel, and years later, the series has found investers and is coming back to (hopefully) do the job right. So it IS possible to salvage a beloved series from this kind of misstep.

I see people are saying they love the game and it is the best game yet, they are saying it's a good game? do you not see the problem?
Bioware doesn't make games that are just good they make great AAA titles, you say this is a good game for the franchise and all Im seeing is no it won't win goty, no it won't be nominated for goty and people laughing at the idea.
If you think this is a good game in the series where is your faith that this game can win goty?

Yea, because they actually are awesome games to most CRPG fans.

Well, maybe Skyrim and Human Revolution will also be cynical rush-jobs? After all, that's what happened with the previous Deus Ex sequel.
Skyrim has been in production for 5 years, that doesnt sound like a rush job to me.

Im not sure I believe in Square Enix. I agree with you, though. For now, i am holding judgment and view Deus Ex: Human Revolution as a wildcard on the outside looking in.
I think Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning could be the real sleeper. Not too much is known about the actual gameplay. But based on early information, and early observations, it will at least be a game that comes out of nowhere.
A fantasy RPG with full lore and story written by R.A. Salvatore...a massive, Elder Scrolls challenging open world with over 120 different dungeons with loot and obtainable side missions (outside quest and other side quests), colorful, unique, art directed by Todd McFarlane...thick, organic rpg elements...leifmotif music...plus a dual combat choice that allows for full strategic play or direct open combat. This combat has been described by Game Informer in these terms "as I watch the demo a second time and witness a rogue cut through a group of kobolds in a way that looks stylish and satisfying, I can't help but feel a pang of disappointment at thinking about how real-time combat works in other RPGs." And that's only if you decide not to use full strategic combat!!!
Of course, im gonna root for Mass Effect 3. I hope beyond hope it is the best game ever made.

Dragon Age: Origins was not really GOTY quality when it was released either. Especially not on consoles.. Yet it is still a fantastic game in its own right.
List of games I love that were/are not really "GOTY" quality: Mirror's Edge, Civilization V, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift (or Calamity Trigger, for that matter), New Super Mario Bros., Goldeneye 007 (Wii), Half-Life Two Episodes One and Two, etc. etc.
Implying that in order to be a good/great game a game has to be GOTY is a silly argument at best, a purposefully trolling argument at worst. Especially in a year with such high quality competition as Skyrim, LA Noire, Uncharted 3, Batman: Arkham City, Portal 2, Pokemon Black/White (which will almost certainly be the highest selling of all these titles mind you), and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

DA2 has better writing than Origins, a cool story hook, good visual design, and (yes, I do think so) much-improved combat -- and that's from the perspective of someone who simply can't and won't play action games. I play it as a tactical turn-based game, and I'm having a blast. The characters are deeper, more real, and less schticky than Bioware has ever written before.
And ... they pulled it out of their hind ends in less than a year, and that good visual design is copy-pasted to hell, and that cool story hook is unevenly shaped and paced, and feels as if planned branches have been lopped off or awkwardly fused together.
So, yeah, that's my point of view: DA2 is a great game that advances the series and shows what Bioware is capable of ... AND it's a sloppily-put-together embarrassment.
No contradiction, just a really uneven product.

Those 2 names almost guarantee that Kingdoms of Amalur will be awful then. Sad, really.

DA2 GOTY? Probably. Unless Kingdom Under Fire II comes out for all platforms this year and contains single player. Then it'll take GOTY.
Skyrim? Yes, it'll take GOTY on some sites but come on, they've taken the classes out of that game. If you thought DA2 was not an RPG and think Skyrim is, you're mistaken. Combat will be terrible as well like with all of Bethesda's games.
The Witcher 2? LOL.
ME3? Again, you know it'll get GOTY on some sites.
It's all down to opinions in the end.
classes aren't needed for a RPG, even most of the good PnP RPGs don't use classes. Skyrim will do fine and at least will have a toolset so annoying stuff can be modded to some degree.
As for the topic:
No, I don't think DA2 will be GOTY. It has a nice story and companions, but not much else besides that.

I should make it clear that my perspective on the overall story comes from watching my roommate -- who found Origins dull and never finished it -- play through the game with great enjoyment. He has immediately started another game to try and get a better ending.
Myself, I'm still in Chapter One.
