I didn't understand the Merrill "Mirror" Storyline as it happened for my character. I was wondering if it is a glitch or if I misunderstood.
When I talked to Merrill at her home, she was crying, said I was right, her people would kill her if they saw her again and she broke the mirror. I was relieved that was over because it didn't seem like a good idea to let her continue. When I talked to her again immediately after, she siad I needed to go back to the mountain with her or she was going by herself. I continued with her and ended up having to kill every single elf to get out.
It felt like a glitch in the story line to me. Merril went from "I am right, she is giving up the mirror project" to "OK let's finish the mirror project". Did I misunderstand?
Oddly enough, I couldn't find a serch function for the forum. I apologize if this has been discussed.

It's possible to prevent the killing of the entire Clan. Hawke must take responsibility. That angers the Clan, but not enough to make them attack.

Yes there is a glitch. The death of the clan thing is a possibility but can be avoided. Anyway it's supposed to happen after you finish her companion quest.

It's a glitch where the end of her quest shows before doing the quest. You can still finish it but it will seem weird that she didn't react to the actions at home. Also, if you don't kill the clan they'll try to kill you if you return.

Thanks! I get it now. I read it in another post too and didn't quite understand. The breaking the mirror was supposed to happen after the quest.
I wish I would have taken responsibility. I felt bad about slaughtering every elf.
