I hated coming home from school just because of the people waiting for me at home.

And I always tell everyone how I hate everybody, but inside I really wish I had people to talk to.

Always with the twilight hate. I wasn't particularly a fan of the movies, I rather liked the books more... a series like twilight put in cinematic form has serious pacing issues, so all the guys wanting giant explosions and partial nudity are in for dissapointment :(

Or interesting characters.
Or a good story.
Or anything that resembles vampires.

I always tell people that I'll get around to playing the Baldur's Gate series, but I won't. Ever.

I've played them at a friend's house when I was around 10, and I disliked them. I tried to get into them again about a year ago. No, just...no.

Terrible UI, mediocre voice acting, and an awfully strange definition of "fun" has made me decide to keep my wallet closed.

OMG I thought I was the only one.
Also I tell people that I love the entire Fallout series.
I love 3 and New Vegas sure but I have no desire to even try the first ones.

They hold up fairly well (the first one, at least...never tried 2). They are unabashedly turn based, though.

Speak, brother, speak!

I've started and abandoned both of them multiple times. I just can't. It's too painful. And I must hate myself because I'll probably keep giving it more chances.

The first Bioware game I played was Jade Empire, followed by KOTOR, both on Xbox 360.

Three years ago, a friend of mine ripped his Baldur's Gates games for me and I couldn't bring myself to get past the epilogue. I also couldn't bring myself to get out of the Epilogue in the first game because I learned Dual Wielding wasn't possible, I escaped from prison in the second and couldn't bring myself to get any further.

My tongue-in-cheek reply to your feed aside, neither of you are in the minority around here. I would say "Baldur's Gate" fans are in the minority these days--even on BioWare's own forums. I know of very few people that started off with KotOR or JE that can stomach it, and fewer still that were introduced to BioWare through ME and DA.

KotOR was the first game they made using their current design model. "Baldur's Gate" was very old school in comparison. "Baldur's Gate II" was a prototype to what is now seen traditional BioWare fare. Like most prototypes, one can discern recognizable qualities that are rough in comparison to a finished version.

@Duncan - You should just give it up. It does not sound like your kind of game. :P I should probably give up on DAO for similar reasons.

The first real RPG I ever played was TES Morrowind. Followed by NWN.

Also, I liked NWN2 more than the original...though many of the reasons I liked DAO were present in NWN2 as well. IMO...

Lastly, and I'm really sorry for this, I'm 26 and still desperately addicted to the O.C....and Battlestar Galactica.  Even though both shows are finished.

That's not that bad. I still watch whose line is it anyway whenever I get bored.

One of my secrets is that I used to sneak into the theater, all the time. One time my brother and I were going, and I snuck right past the ticket guy, without him even noticing.

Hmm reminds me of the time I went to the movies with Jessie, me and him were screwing around, I sat a wig on fire at the rear exit of the theater, surprised no one noticed, which goes to show you, the fire exit is a death trap. Also same day me and him were throwing bricks at a rather large pile of boxes (behind the theater) and just started throwing bricks and rocks at them. Next thing I know Jes, gets a hit on the center of it brings the whole damn thing down just as I throw, and gee guess what, a homeless guy jumps up out of the pile yelling at us "THIS IS MY HOUSE YOU LITTLE ****ERS!" Saddly given I had just thrown my brick it hit him in the head, I'm pretty sure he lived given the amount of cursing, but needless to say we ran like hell.

So to you homeless dude should you have the internet, I am sorry for almost murdering you, and destorying your house. On a side note this was when I was 13 so no use reading this policemen!

Are you sure? Pretty much every thread ends up being a bunch of people saying "BG this" or "BG that" :)

My first BioWare game was actually MDK2. I know it wasn't an RPG, but a damn good game I must say (and older than BG 2, to boot).

Ah, I wanted to get MDK2, but I was 8 at the time, and it was rated "T"...

I didn't have any reason for wanting it other than "cool box art!"

I bought Final Fantasy VII for that very reason.

@Duncan - Yes, I am. For every person I see outside the BG forums praise the game, I see five or more others quickly shout that person down. I also notice it is mostly the same few forumites supporting the BG series here. Every poll and thread I see is skewed toward voiced protagonists, action oriented gameplay, and balance balance balance. The BG fans scream loudly. I do too. It is hard not to with how passionate I feel about that game. I can safely say it helped make my life bearable during that period.

However, when I look at the sheer volume of people shouting down the BG fans, it is overwhelming everywhere. Here, RPGCodex, Obsidian, and several random forums barely worth naming. The only bastians for the BG series I am aware of are scattered forums dedicated to it, modding sites, and perhaps Gamebanshee and GOG. The funny part is those games were seen as mainstream back then. Now they are considered old fashioned relics. That puts the series in a curious position where people that used to think the games were too shallow and overrated then, still do now; while many new RPG fans consider them intolerably antiquated relics.

These are strange times for being a CRPG player, and to a lesser extent, a BioWare fan. I mean, reading the praise DAO, ME, and ME2 have received, and the occasional DA2 is BioWare's best game ever comments illustrates to me how out of touch I am for holding BG2 as my watermark.

I say that the BG crowd had its turn, let us give way to the youngsters who will replace us in a few years.

You know, I always thought I was the ONLY RPG fan to dislike Baldur's Gate in the history of ever. I thought I would get flamed to hell and back. Instead, others have also come forward.

I think that's a pretty good argument for how intimidating the BG fanatics can be. They put that game on a pedestal, and if anyone tries to take it down...god help us all.

"Even a hare will bite when it is cornered."

I like to think I am not a fanatic, and I have defended it passionately in the past. People have already taken it down from its pedestal, however. Those who still hold one or both of those games in high regard will write off claims of newer games' superiority for some reason or other. Personally, I stopped comparing RPGs to BG2 years ago. I eventually came to the realization that it and PST were unique experiences unlikely to be replacated or surpassed. Can I enjoy a newer game? You betcha. I just no longer compare it to those games; as it is pointless to.

I think everyone has a game they feel that way about, or finds one after they have been playing long enough.

Thats why I bought FF7 too! I was small and looked at the front and back of the box.  Then read it a little then decided to get it.  Best decision ever made off the weirdest reason to get it Image IPB

Indeed. I'd buy very few games if I compared them all to Okami or Shadow of the Colossus.
