I was reading another thread where someone commented on how Miranda saves his ass from getting killed a lot.  Another player mentioned that, for him, it was Tali bailing him out.

So, which squad member is always bailing your ****** out?  For me, it's Garrus.  When I should've been in covered recharging my shield, I've been fighting and some badguy finally vaults over my cover to finish me.  But before he can, it's BOOM concussive shot.  Can't even count how many times that's happened.

Turn off squad power usage and keybind them instead of leaving it to chance.

Jack. For some reason she exposes herself too much unless you tell her explicitly to cover, so everyone shoots at her instead of me. That's a form of saving right?

On my infiltrator, Grunt.

Shepard: Hey Grunt , you mind keeping that YMIR mech busy while i go hunt for some ammo?
Grunt : Mind?

I mean the guy cannot be taken down. You can leave your keyboard , go make a cup of coffee and he still there taking bullets. He doesn't save you directly, instead he acts as a meat shield or distraction for the enemy.

On my vanguard I have to go with Katsumi as well. Flashbang grenades can get you those couple seconds you need to get the hell out of dodge if you jumped into trouble. Also she's quite resilient given Shadow strike, which confuses enemies long enough to save both Shep and her.

Must be Grunt.
Only has concussive shot as an active ability, so plays quite similar whether squad power usage is on or off.

I was disappointed with the way they did shotgun AI in ME2 vs. ME1. It forced me to constantly have to manually place Tali (or Jack/Jacob/Grunt) in cover, otherwise she'd go charging into the mobs and get flanked. HOWEVER, this all changed with the introduction of the Geth Plasma Shotgun. For whatever reason, the range difference makes shotgun-wielding AIs act more like they did in ME1, i.e. staying behind you and only blasting enemies who get close. It makes for a world of difference, and though its weird for her to be using a Geth weapon, Tali totally rapes face with it.

Kasumi and Garrus are the other NPCs who constantly save my bacon. Shadow Strike, Concussion Shot or just plane old sniper headshots are always taking enemies down before they become a threat. Garrus is amazing with the Incisor. It's strange hearing the staccato coming from him rather than the one-shot-one-kill from his recruitment mission, but wow, I barely have a chance to engage enemies when Garrus is on point.

Grunt and Jacob. Concussive shot and pull for those enemies that get a bit too close when I'm vulnerable. Particularly as a vanguard.

Kasumi and Garrus...The times Shep has been flanked and Kasumi's shadowstruck even before I know they were there and nothing beats Kasumi's flash bang if Shep is swarmed by husks. Garrus is my favorite for back to back battles, very effective, he keeps his side clear.

Tali does a damn good job of distracting them with her combat orbs so I can plant one in the back of thier sculls with a sniper rifel, and grunt when properly leved and equiped is almost impossible to take dowm

Grunt for me definitely since most of my trouble involves Husks. Hell, I once had him took down a YMIR's armor bar by himself when it was right in front of me (which is very bad when you're an Engineer).

^ This - before I got the Geth Plasma Shotgun, I was always switching Tali back to her pistol and never using her shotgun cause she would always rush head-first into enemies to use her Evicerator and collapse in a lifeless heap in less than 2 seconds. After equiping her with the GPS, however, she suddenly transformed into one of the best and deadiest members of my squad all thanks to the GPS's superior range and damage output coupled with her Energy Drain ability (and somehow she always manages to live longer than Garrus and his sniper rifle).

Honest answer? I think the actual question should be which companion I need to rescue the least amount ...

That'd be Grunt.

Kasumi and Grunt for me as well. Grunt is a tank and Kasumi a freakin' ninja. Zaeed, Samara and Garrus don't generally save me but they tend to fall a lot less than others (maybe the AR keeps them in the fight longer?). For what little I've brought Legion along he does pretty well for himself, especially when equipped with the Widow. Tali, Jacob, Jack and Miranda somewhat I just can't keep on their feet for too long it seems.

Legion and Kasumi for me. Kasumi's shadow strike is great and Legion's combat drone is particulary helpful if my vanguard has bitten off more than he can chew with Harbinger. He'll start focusing on the drone, and that will give me the time I need to get to cover or my powers to cooldown so I can charge and restore my shields.

I've had Grunt save my ass from Harbinger a couple times, pretty fun to have Grunt go CQC on him as well as myself and Grunt with Claymores and just pummel him and cause we're both in close range Harby can't decide which one of us to target and gets confused.

And either Kasumi's Shadow Strike or Flashbang has saved me bigtime too.

Grunt. Kid gets after it and has good weapons, plus he's really durable. Good guy to have on the battlefield when you need a shield recharge.

Kasumi is funny because I almost always end up killing the target that she attempts to shadow-strike.

Grunt and Legion both can soak up good damage, though Grunt is the best meatshield in the game. Krogran Pureblood + Heavy Fortification ftw! Impact shot can be very useful, and Legion sniping is good.
