I laugh at people who say Mass Effect 2 is their worst game... seriously? No I never played them on consoles, Mass Effect 1 pc Mass Effect 2 pc. The writing, voice acting, story, characters, graphics, shooting and cover mechanics were all spot on. Seriously when I read someone who says "mass effect 2 was their worst game.." you must be a God damn troll. Oh no it didn't have a cluster**** of an inventory, oh no the story is bad, oh no the guns shoot and things die.. where is the dice rolling? wahhh
That's why all these lists and debates are silly. I don't like shooters, and I am not a sci-fi fan, so if I made a list, does it not make sense that Mass Effect would be low on my list? And if I did have a list with Mass Effect low on that list, that wouldn't even be indicative of how good or bad the game was, it would be solely based on my personal preference of games. lol

Thank you for sharing. Your list is quite revelatory. I'll say that it's not what I expected (thought I admit that it's been ages since I played any of the games between BGII and ME1).
How are you judging NWN? Based on the single-player campaign? Or the possibilites of the Aurora toolkit?

The top 5 is a really tight group. Number 3-5 could be in any order.ishmaeltheforsaken wrote...

NWN I like for it's basic mechanics (inventory, dance of death combat), presentation (I like the 3D environments, and I think they're about as detailed as 3D environments ever need to be), the conversation system (I like how the voiced lines dance around the PC name, but the text lines do not - and I like that the game doesn't have an entirely new interface just for conversations and instead keeps everything in the text box).
The NWN toolset and campaigns are good - I like all of them - but it's the gameplay systems I'm really judging.
I struggled with the 3-5 ranking because DAO and KotOR offer more varied tactical options than BG2 does, and I prefer their stories, but BG2 presents mechanical data better (again, in a text box) and, like BG and NWN, doesn't have a dedicated conversation interface.
The three at the bottom are there because their conversation systems badly damage roleplaying.

Take into account that in sword/sorcery games I prefer swords, which D&D has mistreated until 4E.
As games:
DA ~ DA2 (DA had better combat, DA2 has a better story and difficulty...all in all, about equal, imo)
ME2
ME1
KOTOR (not a huge fan of d20 rules)
NWN
BG1
BG2 (I hate 2E D&D, and the higher level, the worse it gets)
JE
As RPGs:
DA
KOTOR
NWN
BG
BG2
DA2 (DA2 beats out JE because of the combat mechanics...JE's are awful and at odds with role-playing, imo)
JE
ME1
ME2

I liked the second one.
I loved Jade Empire, & both Mass Effects.
I dug DA:O, I might actually like DA2 better.
MDK was one of my favorite games, & KotOR is easily my favorite game of all time.
That said, I've never played the Sonic Chronicles, or Shattered Steel.

I see... I based my list mostly on the story and the satisfaction I derive therein. If gameplay systems were at the forefront, then the Infinity Engine games would be much lower*. I won't argue with you about the dialogue systems of your bottom three, because I know how you feel, and I feel quite differently
I agree with you on the text box. It's a feature that I missed in Origins and DAII, and I think it's a much better way of presenting the rolls the game is making (which I love seeing; I loved how Baldur's Gate let you see to-hit rolls). Damage numbers floating above characters are... less appealing.
I'm confused... do you view the lack of a dedicated conversation interface as a positive or a negative? I can only interpret your comment as a positive, which piques my curiosity. What's wrong with the conversation interface from KotOR on?
Beyond that, I can only comment on your views of the games' stories. As I said, that's the most important factor that puts BGII on top for me. It pains me to see you disparage it so! (not really, but I have very low opinions of KotOR's and Origins' stories).
*Oh, look at the time. It's been at least twenty minutes since I last talked about how much I hate 2e AD&D

1. Jade Empire
2. Mass Effect 2/Dragon Age 2
3. Dragon Age: Origins
4. Mass Effect
5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
6. MDK 2
7: Baldur's Gate I & II
The gaps between these are very small except for the gap between 6 and 7. I profoundly enjoyed all of the ones about 7.
I should also add that, while Mass Effect 2 is a better game than Mass Effect, the latter is a greater game. The first game was deeply flawed mechanically but basically made a new sort of RPG. ME2 fixed the gameplay of ME1, making it far more playable.

My preferred term for my feelings about 2E D&D is loathe. It contains so much more vitriol within it than a simple "hate".

Thank you for making the distinction between games and RPGs.
Following suit (and acknowledging that I prefer sorcery over swords) :
As games:
ME2 / DA2 (ME2 has meaning for me outside the game itself, but even so, it's about equal with DA2)
Hordes of the Underdark
Shadows of Undrentide
DAO (only marginally ahead of KotOR and JE due to the great party members)
KotOR and JE (I played them at about the same time and love them both dearly)
NWN OC
ME1
BG1
BG2 (I never finished it. I won't lie. After a certain point, I threw up my hands and deemed the quests endless and difficult to keep track of.)
The last three, I actually really don't care much for.
As RPGs:
NWN
DAO
KotOR
BG1
BG2
JE
ME1
ME2
My rating on RPGs is specifically on the variety of choice we have, mechanics and character-wise. In that sense, DA2 is hard to place and thus not in there because I have a lot of conversational options, and the spells/talents really distinguish a character, but the rest of the mechanics fall rather flat compared to DAO. BG1 and 2 are lower because I just have a really hard time with those systems. I can do 3.x, but anything before that... admittedly befuddles me.

It was the less-almighty BioWare game I've played, that's sure... ... and that's when I think of NWN, which was great for some aspects, but there were some I couldn't embrace.
If I want to rate BioWare games, or at least make a decreasing order of my desire to play them:
KotOR / Dragon Age: Origins
Baldur's Gate II
Mass Effect 1
Jade Empire
Baldur's Gate
Mass Effect 2
Dragon Age 2
NWN
That's just my list of course, reflecting my personal taste.

Well (speaking only for myslef), my list is based on how much I enjoyed the games as opposed to any defined ruberic. I went into a little more detail about exactly what my criteria entailed in my reply to Sylvius, but I'm of the mind that not much really matters beyond how much you enjoyed it.
BGII had stupid not-fun combat, but the game as a whole was breathtaking. ME2 had really fun combat, fun enough that I like it more than KotOR, even though I don't think it's really an RPG. Despite its flaws as an RPG or a complex story-driven game, I enjoyed it enough besides that I still consider it "better."
