 I was thinking about trying a 3 mage team - two pure damage dealers and one damage/support and I was wondering if anyone had done this before with any success.  I assume I would take varric with me to catch the traps.

I am definitey a newbie and I will not be playing on nightmare :-)

Thanks in advance for you consideration and comments

I've been doing this on my current playthrough on normal. I suggest using isabella with points in scoundrel and sabotage, as your rogue as you will need an off tank. With anders as you're healer and Merrill for damage most fights have been relatively easy. I would also suggest making sure all your mages have rock armor as that is a life saver.

That sounds like a lot of trouble. Even a specialized Isabella will have a hard time main-tanking because high defense won't cut it against most bosses, and enemy casters. So, yeah I'd suggest either a warrior and let go of locked chests... and 'disarm' traps by eating injuries in the face, or simply be content with only 2 mages for a smoother experience.

EDIT: my experience is almost exclusively with hard mode, though. Normal should be more manageable.

My last game was like that, I made anders go into justice mode a lot and switched to panacea only when I needed to heal, and the dog helps a lot with enemy assassins

Double paraglyph is fun.

CC 8 mobs at the same time is just gg

Yes I think playing mostly three 3 blood/demon mages would fit in nicely with the story. Also the forth has to be Issy because of the bug although she's a little fragile for a tank, would prefer Avelin.

I played 3 mages and Fenris, just for lulz, but it was actually pretty effective. My femHawke is a damage dealer, Anders for heals and Merrill with Entropy to confuse people, and then Fen to beat the crap out of any stragglers. I did it for the party banter and to ratchet up rivalry with Fenris - which worked wonderfully - but was surprised by how pleased I was with the battles.
Having said that, I played on Normal with the occasional lapse into Casual, because it's my first playthrough and I was concentrating on the story.

 I use 3 mages with Fenris tank pretty often and it's devastatingly effective.

With 3 mages you're missing out on cross class combos though. Mages are all about combos as far as I can tell.

First game ended up being a 3 mage/Rogue run from mid-act 2 on. Very possible but, as others have pointed out, you'll loose a lot of the CCCs. It's possible of course, and relatively safe for 80% of encounters. Though assassin/rogues will be a constant thorn and blood mages can wipe out the whole party in one go with the hemorrhage spell if you miss it being cast.

This was my go-to party in my hard play through. Beef Fenris's defences up and he makes quite the 1h tank. ;p Especially with Lyrium Ghost.

Sadly, that means I'm in act3 with Avaline 10 points off of full friend >.>

I'm currently using a 3 mage party on hard.  It's defintiely possible.  I didn't plan to do this from the start so a lot of the companion builds are kind of thrown together including my own.  I use Isabel as my 4th.

I am gonna try this on nightmare for my next game, but I'm gonna setup my companions and builds much better.

You have to focus on more non-tank tactics and it's really more about group power and group attacks on single targets.

I'm doing it right now in Nightmare. Half of the fights end up with Hawke kitting enemies around and everyone else dead. Still in act 1.

Taking crap and multiplying it by 3 doesn't sound like a very good idea...

Go Avaline + 3 mages. Have Avaline set up the staggers and use your various spells for big Cross class Combo damage.

I would suggest you grab force as your first specialization and get upgraded chain lightning on your guys ASAP. I am 99% sure that both Anders and Merril can use the primal tree, so you should be set here.

The biggest problem I can see is the wave mechanic. First wave, you should kill easily with Pull of the Abyss bringing all the units to Avaline. However, the 2nd and 3rd waves are going to be tricky with the ability on cooldown and adds spawning from all sides.

Currently playing a three mage team – Nightmare so far working.

Merrill = tank
Anders = Damage
Issy = support – needed to stop bug
Hawk = Trying out Entropy/Blood mage.

Spend most of the time controlling Issy.

I have before, in limited capacity. To make it more interesting, I've done it with the fourth member being Varric. We wiped a lot of faces.

The key is, I think, learning how to play Pass the Aggro. Once I figured out a good routine wherein enemies were constantly moving from threat to threat allowed me to keep health up and get baddies down much more efficently.
