If there had to be a 'canon' romance story

In DA:O given the importance of Morrigan to the story to me it seemed like the most natural story to pursue is a romance between her and the Grey Warden, with him accepting the Dark Ritual.
This time around, Anders is the most important of the romance option characters because he blew up the Kirkwall Chantry. To me there is an extra gravity and personal tragedy if the Champion was involved in a romance with Anders.
However in the trailers and commercials for DA2, Isabella seems to be the 'canon' love interest for male Hawke, in contrast to how Morrigan was treated by Bioware in the trailers for DA:O.
Is this because of marketing? It seems to me a female Hawke is the most natural protagonist, with a relationship with Anders (The Anders I've known from Awakening was straight).
Thoughts? What traits of the story do you think felt more 'canon'?

Even the thought of it disgusts me.

What? You don't think that's canon? It must suck to be you.

Clearly, canon is a female Dalish mage who romances Leliana, has Alistair perform the Dark Ritual and then marry Anora. Hawke is a canonically naughty girl who was sent to the King's Army when her mother caught her masturbating in the middle of the night while crying out "Andraste! Andraste!"
What? You don't think that's canon? It must suck to be you.
King Ferdinand, I like your canon.
They're all bi!

No different from asking people what background or personality they chose to give the PC and how they play the game, restricting decisions not to their own opinions but what suites the character. It's how I play.

I don't understand why people are getting so upset. That's why I even put the word in quotes.

I didn't get upset. I told you what I thought the canon was. If it was absurdly off-color, that's a shame*, but I meant every word

I don't think there is a canon romance... but I don't really care about these characters too much. Not like how I cared about some characters from DA:O. So I am bias.

Okay, I'll indulge you.
The Alistair/Human Noble seems to be the most involved romance in DAO. Even though it's trite. It also allows the Ritual with Alistair and an interesting moral conundrum - either you let him sleep with Morrigan or one of you dies. So I'd say that this would be the 'correct' choice if DAO was a novel. But hey, 'Witch Hunt' disgrees with me, as it's pointless if you didn't romance Morrigan.
In DA2, I agree Andres has the most emotional impact, and the most impact on the story. Fenris and Isabela are optional characters. Merrill's adorable, but her impact on the story is very minor. So yeah, a male or female Hawke romancing Anders might feel like 'canon'. As this is 2011, let's make it Garrett, shall we?
But what do I know? I've done six DAO playthoughs and I've romanced Leliana every time.

I'm not upset. It's my opinion. I don't see why you need to have a canon romance. It's up to you, romance whoever you want. I like Fenris myself....

You can pretty much see how Bioware points to "canon" choices in their products and they way they market their games. Shepard is male and his LI is Liara, Gray Warden was male and his LI was Morrigan, Hawke is male and his LI was Isabella. They'll probably never use it in any way outside of potential movie tie-in thingies, but it's gives a certain insight into their vision of their stories.
Marketing is dictated by (suprise!) the marketing department. That trailerShep is male, and Trailer Hawke is male (and kisses Isabela) and Trailer Warden was a human male warrior has nothing to do with what the actual game designers and writers imagine.
The people who actually make the games state very clearly that there is no canon, and nothing contradicts that.
That said, this thread is a "what if" scenario, based on the hypothetical that there is canon. I already gave my answer.

Yeah, Witch Hunt was made by marketing dept. Lair of the Shadow Broker must have been too...

There's no canon, but if there was, Garrett/Anders seem just about right. The game kind of pushes you to be a mage or at least, Destiny Hawke (who is a male mage) for maximum involvement and combined with his apostate status, it makes more sense with Anders who can understand him. Of course, that could be said about him and Merrill too since she practices blood magic just like he does.

What do either of those have to do with canon? I played Witch Hunt with a female Dalish mage warden who romanced Leliana. I played LotSB with a female Shepard who romanced (and sacrificed) Kaidan.

The ONLY reason they put the male character on the box and in the ads (which, BTW is NOT 'canon'...) is because this is a personal bugbear of Casey Hudson.
He feels the reason that Jade Empire sold badly is because it has Wu the Lotus Blossom on the cover. Even though it didn't really sell badly, and had widespread critical acclaim.
Because, y'know, having Lara Croft on the box cover really hurt the sales of Tomb Raider, didn't it?

The canon romance is quite obvious imo. It's clearly the Warden(female dwarf noble) and Varric. There is no other option.

I think it's been well-established that Casey Hudson is pretty much a douche. Am I allowed to say that on these forums? Omigod, EA, don't turn off my game! D:

Not true. The ending to WH is horrible if you didn't romance Morrigan.
The ending to LotSB is still great even if you didn't romance Liara.

You say in public what I think in private, my King.
I heard that if you diss Hasey Crudson, EA disables all the gay romances on your disk!

Sigh... it shows there are important characters and there are, well, those other characters that happen to be less relevant. Liliana is a nice gal, but it was Morrigan who got herself a DLC. Anders might seem more storyline influential, but it's Isabella who got herself a cutscene flashback. I'm not telling you these are "canonical canon" choices, but looking at how Bioware runs it's franchises it's hard not to notice certain hints, unless of course someone doesn't want to.
I dread the moment Mass Effect hits the big screens with what will essential be a canon version of the story. People will go ape**** over it...
