Ha, the days of great P.C. based RPGs aren't over, they are just being converted into MMO's. The market has shifted to the point where almost anything that can be released on multiple platforms will be so that more copies can be sold. Baldur's Gate 1/2 had console ports too even though they were terrible and Origins was ported to both consoles, but now instead of making just a game that can be ported they want a game that can run equally on consoles and PCs. It's not that the money just isn't there for pure PC RPGs, it's just that there is more money in multi-platforming. Ultimately, though, there is enough money in MMO's from just the P.C. that they can be purely designed for it.

Maybe if PC gamers actually started buying their games then publishers would start giving a damn about what they think.

Elaborating on that point further, certainly not all PC gamers are pirates and I understand PC gamers being upset that there has been a lack of emphasis on their preferred platform.  However, do not take it out on console gamers for being better customers.

Not talking about piracy but if a game like Origins sells more on the Xbox than the PC, it means that there is something wrong on the PC market.

Oh, hai! I want to subscribe to your newsletter. Considering your great skills to predict the future, not a bad idea to keep up to date with your totally accurate and not possibly wrong predictions. Right?

Even if they ignore other companies that create RPGs (that includes indies, you know, and some of which are actually really good too).

Even if they are so valid as the cliché of "PC gaming is dying" (which, by the way, is false)

Even if they deny that a console game can happen to be good (which wouldn't be the first time ever to happen) just because of the platform.

*sigh*

The release of Dragon Age II signal's the beginning of the end for PC RPG gaming. The day's of fantastic games such as:

  •  Bauldar's Gate

  •  Planescape Torment

  •  Icewind Dale

  •  Bauldar's Gate II - Shadow's of Amn

  •  Icewind Dale II

  •  Neverwinter Nights

  •  and finally... Dragon Age: Origins
are over.

Dragon Age II is not a PC-RPG game. Dragon Age II is a console game. I was reading a gamespot review where the reviewer states:
" inventory management and skill progression, have been stripped down in one way or another--a case of developer BioWare inexplicably fixing that which wasn't broken."
The answer is simple, this makes the game more accessable on consoles.
I was hoping beyond hope that Bioware would not do this. This stripping down is one of the reasons that this game does not measure up to the brilliant RPG's that came before.

Maybe there is not enough money in PC gaming.
Maybe EA has a hand in making sure this game played well to the console crowd.
Who knows..
Dragon Age II is a great action-rpg game.. but it not a PC game at all .. it is a port of a console game.
Too bad.

Well that's just your opinion isn't it. Stating it as a fact may leave you red-faced somewhere down the line.

The games evolve, games are becoming more and more story driven and cinematic. That doesn't mean classic RPG's are dead.

DA2 could be an amazing game if it just had enough development time.

I think "consolizing" is the least of this game's problems. The interface and controls work great and I think the combat is still plenty tactical (and still much better on PC).

The problems with the game are all rooted in how fast it was developed. Copied content and cut corners galore.

Unfortunately some of us have no interest in playing with other people or paying monthly to play a game that will someday be unplayable.

What I get from this topic:-

PC Gamer - Gaming on PC platform is dying *cries* and console gamers are stupid and it's not fair. :crying:

Console Gamer - PC Gamers are all thieves and are treating us console gamers like we're stupid 'n' stuff. :pinched:

MY OPINION

How about, we tone down the over dramatic posts and just say PC Gaming isn't dead in fact it's better then ever. Just because you may play on a different platform doesn't make you stupid or superior to someone else.  I mean I play both console games and PC games and enjoy both.

I'm also enjoying Dragon Age 2.  It isn't as good as Dragon Age Origins, but it's been great so far.  I also think that poster who posted a picture of that Elf maybe your graphics card is poor or something because on the 360 it looks great.

We're all gamers and we should all want the best gaming experience possible and platform wars are childish and extremely sad.

I agree that the dungeon bashing is a little repetitive in DA2, but to claim that it is anywhere near as bad as in Icewind Dale is ludicrous. In Icewind Dale a far higher percentage of your time was spent dungeon bashing, and there was far less variety (surely I am not alone in liking the haunted house).

Dragon Age 2 has its problem to be sure, but as an RPG it is at least an order of magnitude better than Icewind Dale.

At least every dungeon was unique and a mystery in itself. In Dragon Age II you just go through copy paste dungeon after copy paste dungeon ad nauseum. Icewind Dale was a dungeon crawler with some of the best dungeon crawling out there. To claim that Dragon Age II fares better in this aspect is asinine.

So no, I definitely do not agree about Dragon Age II being a better RPG. Sure, it has better presentation but the dungeon crawling aspect is absolutely worthless. I guess it comes down to priorities and I most certainly prioritize gameplay over presentation.

I don't think "PC gaming" is dead, or will ever be for that matter. I think what we are seeing is more that consoles are more affordable compared to a PC and are getting closer to what a PC can do with each generation. The main advantage the PC has over consoles is graphics...the powerful graphics cards that it has available. (though some cards don't live beyond 3-4 years of constant use). The keyboard and mouse is also a standard and not an accessory. While it is easier in this day and age for many to use those devices in everyday life, where gaming is concerned some find it uncomfortable. To someone on a budget and/or doesn't care about upgrading hardware, etc. every so often, the console is an easy fit as it is more cost effective for them. It also means developers can get their products to a larger audience. I can understand that. I personally don't like those little analog sticks on the controller but that is just me. It goes both ways really.
What we are seeing now is because platforms are closer together in what they can do people can choose what they prefer without worrying about missing much. However, there is also a flip side to this. Developers trying to make a game that's accepted equally across all platforms without it being optimized for each will always run the risk of alienating one crowd or the other.

I'm a PC gamer. The main advantages for me as such it I've always been more comfortable with a keyboard and mouse with so many buttons that I can customize however I want, versus a restrictive controller. I built my machine. If something goes wrong with it I can fix it. I do not have to mail it off somewhere. Most of the time not an issue if the parts are of quality. I can also upgrade parts as need be. But working on the machine itself is a pleasure for me and thus relates directly to how much I enjoy using my PC for everything, including gaming. My machine might not be new anymore but it still runs great. I'm like a Quarian in the Migrant Fleet...upgrading and replacing as need be. But I enjoy it. Not everyone would. Probably my main gripe with a console would be if anything ever did go wrong with it, I wouldn't know how to fix it.

Baldur's Gate was never ported to the console. The PS2 Baldur's Gate games were completely different games. lol

Quite the contrary, the golden age of CPRGs is just beginning with the development of strong AI and cutting edge dynamic graphics, it's only going to get better. Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape were quaint little CPRGs that got Bioware on the map. The AI will finally learn from the main PC as to how you play the game and be a real dungeonmaster, instead of rolling page after page of stat sheets and inventory. Plus Bioware is an international company, not just catering to those south of their border. There's far more intelligent players in England and the commonwealth that are being catered to, and quite honestly rightfully so. The dark ages from which the period of technology in the Forgotten Realms is taken, is an European experience, not North American at all. The only real role playing game that captures an American experience is another excellent game Red Dead Redemption. Games that deal with the Civil War and Western expansion are really the only games those south of the border have a viable voice to critique on. There aren't many of those, so I would suggest put up or shut up if you are from a country without a rich European Medieval experience, because basically you don't know what you're talking about.

That makes no sense at all.  Only Europeans can criticize western fantasy RPGs?

It does help. It brings you closer to acceptance because really what the few say wont matter compared to what the many want.

What many want is what made ME2 and DA2.

I think you need to expand your internet bowsing capabilities because the many have spoken and unvirsally panned this garbage game.

Or really? I saw plenty of high scoring reviews out there that had depth outside of just a number behind a face that offers no words to back it up. Not to mention that DA2 still sold quite well so if you ask me it's you that should expand your vision behind the blindness that you've inflicted upon yourself.

You're just as bad as those who blindly wish for the Killable ME2 Squaddies to return as Squaddies for ME3. it's laughable how blinded they are to the truth and the facts.Posted Image
