I'm curious to know how do you play the game during fights ? Since i always played DA 1 in real time i tend to do the same in DA 2 but anything above Normal difficulty pretty much require pausing the game.
Real Time or Pausing ?

Just pause when you need to pause
and spam R when you don't.
Thats how I play it anyways. Even on Nightmare, though I have to pause more often (or very often).

I can't play this game without pausing it constantly, and not because I want to either. The squad AI and tactics are just as awful, if not worse than before, and with the faster pace they just get into trouble that much quicker.

I use tactics to take some of the heat off myself and pause every now and then to issue manual commands. I leave consumable items to manual control on principle (I'm a packrat), and try to do as little pausing as I can, but I still do quite a bit of it.

I saw an amazing tutorial where someone beat the Rock Wraith on Nightmare without hardly pausing. I can't pretend to be able to do that. I am constantly pausing and micromanaging every character action.
Sometimes after everyone else dies and I have only one character left, I can run away from the enemies for a while without pausing until I either get killed or manage to revive the other party members.
The only Tactics I have enabled are sustained modes that I want to be always active in combat. For example, Summon Mabari Warhound on Hawke, Lyrium Ghost on Fenris and Rock Armor on Merril.

I rarely pause unless I have a depleting health problem on someone and they are about to die. Then I switch to my mage to see if heal is available, and if not I have the dying companion take a potion. Other than that it breaks up the flow of gameplay in my experience and I prefer not to pause. I influence my companions actions by choosing all their skill point attributes and talents and setting the tactics for them.

I'd like to try a playthrough without pausing in the future.
I think it will be very difficult on Nightmare or Hard.

Be interesting. Probably have to spend lots of time tweaking tactics. I normally disable most and pause like crazy.

The problem is not ability usage in tactics, the problem is that your companions are retarded when it comes to positioning. There's one preset that says your companions will get out of AOE, but it also says they won't attack, so that's stupid. And if you use hold position, your melee will knock enemies back out of their own range and then just stand there looking dumb (so you take one melee and micro that character). That's why so much pausing is typically necessary.

Pause Monkey FTW!

^ I agree with him Pause Monkey definately. I found having mages and my rogue on cautious and and certain tactics specs that focus specifically on cross combos to be most effective. Then all I gotta do is keep attention on my warrior (Aveline in my case) and choke point whenever possible. That has moved pausing down to mainly when it's time to cross combo and manage a choke point when necessary. But I still swear by pausing like crazy.

I play mostly real time but pause sometimes when it's hard to target a mob.

I reallly like how tactics work in this game. you have tons of slots open right from the beginning so I took advantage and had my entire party pretty successfully automated just running on tactics - using pots and such. usually do play in real time but pause to reposition on the battlefield if its a tough battle

I paused a lot less in Da2 thatn i have in other Bioware releases, mainly cos there is far less strategy. If I run away from an enemy, it's in realtime.
An example of when I would pause is Orsano's fight when he does the blood leech - only had two spells that would interrupt that)
If i switched to casual, i never paused...no need, don't even need to cast spells the fights were always over so quick
