Since I'm friends with Merril and get her friendship bonus with is: 1 towards mana for ever health point, could i just every point into constitution and get both a ton of health while also getting a ton of mana? If its not a good idea tell me why. thx

It's not a good idea if you don't want to make her broken good. (read that again... yes, that's what I mean)

This is a very good idea. Do that and give her any blood magic boosting items you can find. She'll be both a tank and a very good mage at the same time.

So focus only on magic and constitution. Let her use sustainables to take up her whole mana pool if you can, you'll be using health for casting anyway.

The best sustainables to get for Merril are her 2 sustains in her Dalish Pariah tree, Arcane Shield, and Rock armor, which coincidentally all add up to 100% of her pool.

Currently have my warrior's Merrill with three Blood Magic improving items, and the friendship bonus, and we're only just a bit into act 2. So she's at a 1-to-6 hp/mana conversion. Been no issues with her being in danger yet, fights just don't last long enough. Have to fight a protracted boss battle for a more stress test on it.
She runs her Pariah sustains and Arcane Shield, elemental weapons and heroic aura (moded)

This.  Merril is a beast when respec'd into a dalish blood mage.  Just be sure to deactivate her blood magic when she's needs healing (boss fights for e.g.) or she won't get healed.

Yay, I did the same thing. I was planning on her having Arcane Shield when I was thinking about having Anders in my party with Heroic Aura. Then I remember I hate Anders and I needed a tank more than another mage.

What's funny is that I'm having easier times with fights that I found diffucult with my "Warrior playthrough with Heal Bot Anders."

Thats because this game is all about offense. The quicker you kill your enemies the easier it is to heal. Having a full support Anders only works well if your party is full of the best DPSers in the game (i.e. you are rogue hawke). Defense is only worthwhile on bosses and they are few and far in between.
