My Mage seems a little too squishy.
I am half way through Act two (on my way to the duel)
I have the elemental tree, force tree and some of the spirit healer tree, no upgrades in force or spirit healer.
Any suggestions for making my mage more powerful and a lot less squishy, I have respec potions.

yeah, you really need to either have a solid aggro plan or a plan to take some damage.
a few tips
1) rock armor does wonders... well worth the point.
2) rouges goad and armistice ability are pricelist for helping control aggro... read them a bit, you will find you do not need taunt at all if you have 2 rouges on your team
3) con is an important part of any character outside of a rouge, in which stealth is a good thing to have.

No points into con, I figured there would be some decent shield spell that would save my ass but so far I am not seeing it.
Sounds like I better respec a little.

I have a level 18 mage in NM with all Magic and Willpower. Your mage will always be squishy unless you choose Blood Mage and pump constitution. Rock Armor helps and Unshakable helps you keep from getting pimp slapped all over the battlefield.

Rock Armor is nice, esp if you invest heavily in that tree to get the final upgrade that makes Rock Armor even more badass. Mind Blast is great too.
Overall, the mage is still left very squishy while rogues can at least stealth, decoy, miasmic flask, etc, etc, to drop their aggro or can even straight up leap all over the place like a bunny so it's harder for enemy rogues to track them while the mage is very vulnerable standing in one spot.

I had fun with my tank mage, it's really gimmicky but fun.
Blood dragon armor, then points into magic, grab Rock Armor, then go force mage whenever possible. It's fun.

putting con up to 20 goes a long way on any character

I have a modified 20 Con, Rock Armor and some reasonable robes that I've found and have around 67% Damage reduction by level 20 and can generally last as long as Fenris toe-to-toe with enemies. Enemy Stealth Rogue/Assassins generally only do about 30% of my health in damage. I chose Force Mage and am on Normal difficulty.

Seems I was taking much more damage than I should of due to the slowdown/damage friendship bug.

Yeah, that bug can really hurt. Thank goodness I'm on the PC so I was able to use the editor to fix it.
However, even a few points into CON will help a lot, especially against those blasted SuperRogues, and Force's passive that gives you 100 Fortitude is another huge help.

There is actually. Well a few tips from my 2 Nightmare runs that have helped heaps so far:
For one, the complaints from some people that it's useless to spec for another attribute than your class mains is a lie. Plain and simple. In DAO it was true, in DA2 it's completely different. Most abilities use a set amount of stamina / mana for instance, and a lot of builds with my assassin and warrior were a LOT more viable after putting a mere 5-6 points into Willpower for instance. That can amount to some 20% total increase in stamina, which is more than enough to finish combos that were previously too heavy, which will get you the enemy kill that triggers stamina restoration talents, which in turn will restore MORE stamina because they're based on percentages of max (and your max is now higher than before).
The same applies to hitpoints. It can well be worth it to spec there for hitpoints.
Another alternative is speccing for Blood Magic. For that you need to store a lot of blood mage gear but once you get it, you can spec fully to con. With some 300+ hitpoints you have plenty of survivability and thanks to something like 1 to 6 or better hp to mana conversion rate, you also have a lot more mana for your spells.
Of course, you can just do what I do most of the time. Get Force Mage's Unshakeable talent asap. Then get an upgraded Barrier. This way even if you screw up with your basic micromanagement and allow your mage to be attacked, the mobs can do nothing to stop the mage from shielding themselves from all harm for 6 seconds. 6 seconds is way more than enough for you to use the other toons and the tank to grab the aggro away from the mage.
However, to be fair, you don't even need that if you just play the game right. In Nightmare mode you learn rather quickly to be aware of your surroundings to the point of not having to worry for mages. Basically, ALWAYS have someone cover them and instantly pick the aggro off the mage by whatever means possible. If you see someone attack the mage, immediately put Varric or your other mage or whatever on them to interrupt them and grab aggro away. Always have your group move in a formation, so that your tank is the first one to enter any room, and when the fight starts, there's someone behind the mage. That way the enemies respawning in front will aggro the tank, and the ones spawning behind (as they always do) will aggro your archer, backup mage, rogue or whatever.
I'm on my second Nightmare run now, and while I was positively furious about how much my mage got ganked in my first Normal difficulty playthrough, I've since learned that it was only my own lack of skill and tactics that even made it possible. You need to manage the team and the battle, just slapping a spell there and forcing all the toons to attack the same targets one at a time will not work. You need to divide fire, deal with both the central mass, the special elites, AND the stragglers, adds or spread out archers all at the same time.

Going by Merrill, I can attest that blood mages have an impressive tank. I was surprised. Only bad thing is that if you wanna wear the good gear for your hero, you are gimped into training willpower so poor Hawke won't be as impressive till much later on.
