I am finihsing all available quests before heading to Deeproads but lack of any progress in romances made me think I might have done osmething to stop them without realising
for both Fenris and Anders when I had first quest to visit them I picked one heart option in conversation but as at the time I wasnt sure if I liked the characters when second hart option appeared I went for neutral response ( I did not take heart braking option). They both made comments along the lines of we will speak later but I tied up most of the quests and am about to go into Deeproads and neither of them will speak to me.
Did I end the romance because I didn't choose more heart options in fist conversations we had? Or do i need to increase their rep? Fenris is my tank and quite high on rivaly but Anders is not in the party at present.
did I kill my romance options?

You do need to build up rivalry/friendship points, but you can't progress very far into the romances in the first act anyway - keep building up the points and things should get moving again in the second act.

After the deep roads you have quests to go see your companions, thats when things get intresting and thats where most flirting starts.

You should go with Rivalry for both, for better romances.
Anyway, Act II provides the most...substance of the relationship. Including the sex.

I think you need to have at least selected the flirtatious dialogue, then after the Deep Roads you get to take it further. Everything happens after the Deep Roads.

You don't have to flirt at ALL before the Deep Roads to open up romance options in Act 2. On my first run I didn't flirt with Isabela at all during Act 1 (though I did flirt with Anders), but he still initiated the romance with flirt options in Act 2 that ended up with them sleeping together before Hawke moved onto Anders.
