So I trot outside and hey, there's some Elves being angry at me. I try to calm the situation down but we have to turn these chumps into bloody lumps all the same. Big whoop. Down I go to the Dalish Camp and, somehow, they all know what I just did and decide to attack me. Mmm, chunky elf salsa.
Merill says one line about this. One. She's busy helping you slaughter her own (former) clan and she says one thing about how she can't believe it's happening. And once we're done, she doesn't say any thing else about wiping out an entire clan of Dalish and their Keeper.
Being completely bored of this goddamn mountain, I run for the zone out. And on the way I pass through a Party Conversation activating thing. And Merill has a nice chat with Varric about a ball of string. I go back to Kirkwall. Quest complete. That's it.
Just murdered an entire clan of Dalish elves and the most I got out of it was a bit of blubbering and a chat about string. Am I missing something or what?

Why? I thought the hostile tag on the clan had busted or something. There was nothing, she didn't speak and the game continues like you just walked out. I thought I slaughtered an entire clan of Dalish because a bug made them hostile.
I did not think that was supposed to happen because that's a BIG moment and there's nothing there after or during.

In that case no elf needs to be killed.

Well my Hawke was in love with Merrill, so she did itTJPags wrote...
Yes, Alex, that's true - but my Hawke didn't feel like taking the blame for something that wasn't his fault.
I admit I had to reload once because my first choice was 'the keeper turned into an abomination' which caused the elves to jump me.

All Hawke did was clean up a mess that existed before Hawke ever arrived.

I was expecting more of a fight though, even the thugs in Lowtown put up a better fight.

No one says that because it's not Hawke's fault. Merrill's the idiot who put herself over her whole clan and made a deal with a demon. The Keeper's the idiot who paid Merrill's debt to that demon.

This dialogue is stupid. Why would the elves jump you if you tell them that she turned into an abomination and leave you alone if you said that you just killed her. It should rather be the other way. I don't kill an entire elven tribe because of that. It's not about roleplaying or something. It's making sense to a situation that doesn't make sense.

thank you. Plus, in my version, after we slew the entire village of Dalish, as we started to walk away Merill turned to Anders and said, "Did I ever tell you how much I like that robe of yours?" She was clealry deeply affected...

It's such a big moment that's ruined by the way it's presented.

IIRC, you have 3 options to tell the clan:
1. Merrill did it "KILL THEM!!!!!!!!!!!"
2. Marethari turned into a demon and attacked us "KILL THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
3. I did it "Oh, okay, well, then go away and don't come back"
Seems that if anything should be the "fo away and don't come back" choice, it would be 2. <shrug>
Did I miss any options?

I always wondered why there wasn't a fourth option: give Merrill up to the Dalish for their own justice. You can give Fenris up to the slavers, surrender Isabela to the qunari, etc. But why not Merrill?

Maybe Merrill is the unkillable character that must return in DA3 for continuity.
Or whatever reason there is that certain characters need to return.

Why would you, you monster
It's not like it's Merills fault - she knows what she's doing, understands how these things work, and still brings two experienced mages (and a spirit) along to help her deal with the demon. The Keeper just got in our way, and got eaten by a demon in the process.

I think Merril is somewhat of the key to the secrets of Ancient Arlathan. That's why I pull this quest through even though I could just tell her no. At 100% friendship she has fallen for Hawke anyway. But I think it is a good lesson for her that dealing with demons is bad and not only because she risks HER life, but also everyone's.TJPags wrote...

The Keeper was kind of foolish to do that. I mean there was still my Hawke to put things right. I don't know why people who could just ask Hawke always try to put things right on their own.

I thought the same thing. Possible the mirror and Merrill are a big part of a future DLC or DA3.

You're probably right. I just wonder why you were even allowed to kill Leliana if she was the linchpin to DA3, as she seems to be. Never mind. The Plot Gods must know what they're doing
