I'm starting to think that blood mage is awesome... you do need to watch your health spending, but she can obtain like 1:4 ratio and free sustains... i personally like to place rock armor and arcane shield on, so thats like having 28.5 mana per con... and with her not needing wisdom for anything, its a solid 50/50 mix of magic and con. so she gets extra damage and magic resistance from not having 3 stats to add to.
arguments the other way?
does it make sense not to have Merill a blood mage?

Only reason to increase mana for Merill would be so she could use more sustainables. Otherwise, there is no argument.

sustains work on a %, and with blood mage on, you can go as far over 100% as you want

For Merril, no there is no reason to not make her a blood mage. She actually makes a pretty decent DPSer with all her tree up to make her do damage in her vicinity and regeneration per enemy around her. Maybe a couple of points in wisdom, but nothing much and max out passives and cast from health. She is awesome as bloodmage, but Hawke to me stinks as one, which is a shame.

I didn't use her Blood Mage abilities because I am opposed to blood magic. Instead I focused her on Entropy, Spirit Magic, and Nature. In the end she was very effective as a disabler/spirit damage dealer AND reasonably durable as well (with +10% DR as a full rival and her armor bonuses which regened health).
For attributes I pumped points into Willpower, Magic, and a decent dose into Constitution.
