Dragon Age 2 is actually a very solid, fun game. It would have been well received, under normal circumstances, and would probably become a cult classic. It's wonderful for a random games company (I enjoyed it more than Two Worlds II, for instance). The problem is that its been made by Bioware, who are traditionally the kings of the genre.
For them, it just seems rushed and lazy. None of the depth of the BG series or DA:O. The plot has wonderful ideas (like the framing device), but it has the narrative control of a late series of 24, lurching from story to story, with no real idea why or where it's going. Alistair and Morrigan were the only characters in a computer game I've felt genuine emotional attatchment to: the follow up is just too short and superficial to generate the same magic The graphics are a generation behind the curve. The recycled areas are just shocking for a triple A title. Bioware has mastered all these issues. BGII makes people squeak with glee when they reach Akathla and realise how enormous the game is. Beautiful unique painted backdrops, even in the shops that you'd see for all of 5 minutes. DA2 literally has 6 areas, just with different lighting! What-the-what?!? The marketing budget has been enormous, plastering TV around the globe for a week. Maybe half that next time and do what Bioware is so traditionally brilliant at: writing deep, immersive worlds?
Again, all this would be fine if this were just some company. It's a little like having a delicious dinner at the Outback Steakhouse. Wonderful, for the location. But if a three star Michelin restaurant served the same meal, people would be like "What in balls is this?".
This would be an excellent cRPG (if not made by Bioware)
