Okay so here is a really cheap way to beat this guy even on nightmare. If you can make all your party ranged attackers, you need at least one to make this work. When the battle starts lure the Varterral to the nearby stairs (the ones you enter from) , now the Varterall should not be able to come up the stairs , but he can still used his ranged attacks to damage you . Now go back up the stairs until you are on the area that is completely above the area where you fight theVarterral , he should still be on the bottom of the stairs. You should be something that look a cliff . Move to the left corner of the cliff .Now all your ranged attackers can attacvk the Varterral from above , the only attack he can use on you is the one where he causes the tremor that makes rocks fall on you. This attack won't damage you that much. Now your ranged attackers can attack him until he is slain. The only thing left to do is kill the spiders he summons and the battle is over .

Follow primary quests and Merrill's quests.

Its in Sundermount, but instead of heading right to head up the mountain, head left towards the other exit. If you stick to the right after that it will take you towards their lair. I think you can only access it in Act 2/3, but I may be mistaken.

I've been avoiding the main quests in act 2 and doing side quests. The only quest I can do now is Blackpowder in act 2 so I guess I'll go on to that. So is it up where the dragon is or is it where the lower level cave is?

Used this very thing in Deep Roads aswell to kill the mommy spider in the pit.

Really wish they would finally do away from cheap means like this, rather make the boss fight be a puzzle or have some other effects on it. I mean Ancient Rock Wraith was atleast interesting compared to the kiting-fests you can do with all the dragons and Arishok.

You only get access to Merril's varterral quest after you've done the Blackpowder Courtesy.

It works the same way with the big spider in the Deep Roads, he's too fat to climb up the stairs lol. You could shoot him all day.

Alternatively.. Get a Mage Hawke, give him spirit healing and auto-attack everything to death. :P

Monstrous spider is ridiculous on normal, I would jsut not engage it on nm. Once that spider is after you, you're pretty much dead.

You can't stealth or anything from the recumbent position. Getting knocked down by that spider is 10x as deadly as finding yourself in the mouth of the high dragon.

How does that make sense?

It doesn't. Even with knockback resistance and high fortitude the spider is still deadly. But then again, it also doesn't make sense for mobs to spawn out of thin air conveniently right next to your ranged characters, or having to fight 3+ bosses at once. Almost every single encounter can be cheesed and in certain cases the game somewhat encourages you to do so (especially on NM). Simply put, if it looks like an ambush and smells like an ambush, then its probably an ambush and in almost all cases, the enemy will have the positioning and numbers that give them a clear tactical advantage. Solution ? Don't fight where they want you to (assuming its possible to avoid it).

On nightmare, the only way I beat him was with the stair glitch. Varric was the only one left, he just rocked everyone else. I'm surprised he couldn't shooot poision like the small spiders.

Those Wasp Spiders are viscous.  If you get knocked down by any spider your pretty much dead especially as a mage.

Man I wish there was shapeshifting.  Bear vs Monstrous Spider, that would be awesome.

Ha!! That's the one I found too - just to the left of the door as you back up the stairs. I had to keep moving, though, once the pebbles started falling from the ceiling, 'cos those big boulders he shakes loose just squashed me flat - in fact, they do so wherever you are, if you stand still once he starts banging his feet.
