I simply cannot agree.. The Witcher is one of the worst pieces of trash I've ever played in my life, how it had good ratings is beyond me, but I trudged through 30 minute crashes throughout the entire game, and finished everything, and I never enjoyed a single moment of it... UTTER TRASH.

I've never played the Witcher, so I can't judge it, but I do agree that "Well, it was an indie developer" is a bull**** excuse. Whenever you're composing a list like this, your standards have to be the same across the board. KotOR2 barely made my list because of it's buggy, too-easy, incompleete messiness, but I loved the story and characters so much that I never once cared when I was playing.

I thought the patched Witcher was decent.   I can't help but wonder if Witcher 2 will be dragged out back and shanked like DA2.

Witcher has a passionate fan base as well.

Every single Fallout game has been one of the most overrated meh-fests I've ever played. I got an hour or so into New Vegas before I gave up. FO3 I beat, but I never really liked much of it. And the first two games I played when I was in my early teens, and I kept thinking "I wish I were playing Baldur's Gate." And when I was playing Baldur's Gate, I kept thinking "I wish I were playing real D&D*."

*Which I hated, by the way. 2e AD&D is the worst pile of refuse and garbage I've ever read, and isn't worthy of the word "game." After all, "games" are for entertainment, not self-flagellation.

My Top 5 RPGs:

1.) Planescape: Torment  (Lots of detailed dialogue, interesting story/universe and lovable NPCs)
2.) The Witcher (Strong hero, dark, dirty and adult, choices that affect the game at later stages)
3.) Quest for Glory (Series of Adventure/RPG hybrid games, able to import your char from one game to the next)
4.) Suikoden II (Console RPG, Lots of NSCs, strong sad story, brings out emotion)
5.) Fallout II (The great postapocalyptic setting, here with a good deal of fun, sex & crime)

You will notice that some of those games are quite old by now, yet they remain because the next generation failed so far at creating something that manged to suck me into the game like those titles did. DA2 fails making even a Top 20 list, mostly due to your decisions having no true impact on the outcome of the game and the poor third act.

As much as i enjoyed DA2, i wouldn't perhaps list it on my top-5 rpg's.

My list would be pretty much this (in no particular order).

1. Dragon Age: Origins
2. Fallout 2
3. Deus Ex
4. Knights of the Old Republic
5. Vagrant Story!

Never played Baldurs Gate and I doubt I could now.

Fallout 1 and 2 the same applies to.

ALTHOUGH, I did like the Broken Steel DLC for Fallout 3, that was fun.

1. Dragon Age Origins
2. Fallout 2
3. Fallout 1
4. Baldurs Gate 2
5. KOTOR

Unfortunately, DA2 is no where on my list. While there was a moment in ACT 2 where I thought things were looking up (review wise), ACT 3 made me want my 40 hours and 70 dollars back.
In fact, I was so upset, that My Boyfriend thought I was mad at him because I couldn't even express what had made me suddenly so quiet and sullen.

I agree with some of the posts. Failout was an RPG/FPS hybrid, taking negative elements from both. Elder Scrolls series are basically games that go nowhere. Who gives a crap about exploring cave #29393?

I'd put DA2 in my top five for sure. If I had to make a list ... leaving off JRPGs, because they're really an entirely different animal -- if one that I personally really enjoy ...

1. Quest for Glory 4
2. Dragon Age 2
3. Dragon Age: Origins
4. Quest for Glory 5
5. Baldur's Gate 2

I'd LIKE to put the whole QfG series on there, especially since it makes me cry not having 2, but it seems unfair.

Top 5 RPGs for me (with expansions):

1) Mass Effect 2
2) Dragon Age: Origins
3) Mass Effect 1
4) Knights of the Old Republic
5) Neverwinter Nights 2

DA2 isn't really good enough to be a top 5. I'd say it sits about 9-10 in a top 10, though.

Not reflecting my priority, love all of the mentioned RPG.
1) KOTOR
2) Mass Effect 2
3) DA:O
4) Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
5) NWN 2/ Witcher - shared spot, as I love both.

Good old times. I noticed I take more and more interest in indie developers, because they create something original or something from the old days, just updated, which is better than most AAA projects these days.

Presumably the people posting that they love those games. It's a great step forward when you can differentiate between "I don't enjoy that" and "that sucks." For instance, I actively disliked the feeling of being "on rails" in DAO, but I can accept that that's because I prefer discovering my characters' stories on my own to being led around by developers, and that others have different preferences. It's a very liberating distinction.

How can anyone like The Witcher with all those bugs and plot-hole crap story line?

Dude, Patch 1.2 fixed almost all of them and then patch 1.4 and the Directors cut finished off the rest.

If there are bugs left in the game it's minor. The Witcher was praised for it's great story setting.

Nope, had directors cut, crashed every 30 mins, top-line computer.

Honestly think I'd make a mistake like that?

And no, just like DA-2, they were REVIEWED well, the game is crap... I have seriously not played a more menancing piece of game that literally makes you drag yourself through the game because of its horrid gameplay, design, story, and everything else...

It also had horrible level design and repetitive qualities... it was utter crap, I keep it on my computer only for the fact that I like to have EVERY game installed.

Eh, I never had it crash once. The only complaint I have is that the American version has censored sex cards. Lame. >_>

Lol.

I hope there would be two versions of every game. One for US markers and one for EU markets. US markets would get the PG13 pretending to be Mature rated version. EU would get real Mature rated version.

Edit: Great idea! Everyone would be happy.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl is a fantastic game and its one of the very few games that I've replayed mutiple times. The atmoshpere and story ranks up there with the best in my opinion.

Having wrote all of that I never thought of it as an RPG. After thinking about it a bit I can see where one could lean that way though and checking out the Steam store page I see it is listed as an Action RPG.

Strange.

Sorry it doesn't make my top RPG list, I neither loved or hated it. Overall I enjoyed playing but couldn't quite connect with the characters or the story. The philososophy of the classic RPG found in DA:O has been lost. Too much ME2 influence.

My best RPGs:

Dragon Age Origins
Elder Scrolls 1-4
Baldurs Gate

I think it is as much RPG as DA2 is RPG. If it just "streamlined" a little bit more it doesn't matter anything.

That said, NHL11 is more RPG than DA2. You play a predefined character but you have tons of skills and you can actually affect your career. You can also change your looks and earn better gear.

I know RPG noobs does not understand this.

No, and neither is DA:O.

My top 5:

  • Curse of the Azure Bonds (old SSI "gold box" game)
  • Baldur's Gate 1
  • Icewind Dale
  • Suikoden 2
  • Lunar the Silver Star (and its various iterations)

Also, if it is or isn't, why not? What is your top 5 favorite RPG's?

In order...
~ "Vampire the Masqurade: Bloodlines"
~ "Dragon Age: Origins"
~ "Jade Empire"
~ "Knights of the Old Republic: The Original"
~ "Neverwinter Nights II"

I don't know specifically why, but I liked "Jade Empire" more than "Knights of the Old Republic". It could be that "Jade Empire" is not a "Star Wars" game, so it gets high marks for being something different.

There are plenty of RPG elements in some sports games.

Just for example Madden NFL games used to let you take a team through 10 seasons or more and manage everything from coaches and players, team uniforms, where you wanted your team (You could change cities) right down to how much you charged for parking and hotdogs.
You even handled advertising.

There was also a mode that let you create a player to be drafted and you guided him through his career for multiple seasons.  Heck, you could even import a created player from your college game into Madden and get him drafted into the NFL.

I haven't bought a Madden game in a couple of years so I don't know if they've changed and remove those things but, yeah, I know exactly what you mean.

I never read any previews or anything else about Stalker though. I bought for $1.99 during a Steam sale started playing it and that was it. Is it an RPG? I can see where some  would say so.
