Anders sucks ass. But yeah, kill them before they kill you, fighting 101.

The way I handle enemy rogues, mages, and other highly dangerous enemies is to cast petrify on them at the start of the battle and kill their squishy friends while keeping an eye on them. When petrify wears off I have an upgraded winter cast on them. I make sure a warrior bellows and I have a force mage use Gravity Ring. That slows them enough when winter wears off and by that time all other problems are dead leaving that high health/armor/high threat target alone to get mobbed by my party. I've learned to manage my cross combos too and those help alot. That demon that gives the exorcist achievement was a piece of cake thanks to cross combos and choke points. Swear by walking bomb in this game. Though I notice that virulent bomb ain't so virulent I wonder if it's broken.

But that's just me with two mages, one warrior, and one rogue.

If your a warrior,
get stonewall upgrade and whirlwind.

If they are in stealth and you whirlwind and they are in the area, theystill get hit and will come out of stealth.
Or you can use bulkwark upgrade to stonewall. If you have bulkwark on when they try to baackstab you, it blocks all damage and sends it back to the assassin.

Make Anders use Glyphs on them to stop them goning near him and then your warriors or anyone elses can hit them before they recover.

Rock Armor and Arcane Shield. If Anders is your healer, he do not have to cast that much. so he dont need that much mana, only for a few spells, so, why not making him more tough?

You can fight fire with fire. Have your rogue stealth and move in to one shot before they hit you ;)

ie: www.the-guardians.org/photo/var/albums/da2/2011-03-17_00019.jpg

If all else fails, have a mage with the first tactic as petrify target highest health usually works wonders.

44428 nature damage?  I'm guessing going duelist was my mistake lol.  What's your build if you don't mind?

44k dmg is nowhere near the max but you asked for the build so here it goes:

If you play this on nightmare this build will make you very fragile so its important to not go overboard, most enemies will 2-3 shot you, if you go for an assassinate use a threat dump right after or run out of its a melee enemy.

Note: The lvl 1-20 builds assume you have never gotten a single extra talent point, in reality you can get close to 10 extra pointss by the time you hit that level so just grab talents from the next build as needed.

BUILD:
lvl 5 http://biowarefans.c...uilder/#rYEzM1Y
lvl 10 http://biowarefans.c...YEzM1Y0c1tel0kH
lvl 15  http://biowarefans.c...c1tel0kH1aVBDFs
lvl 20 http://biowarefans.c...0kH1aVBFsHErDkQ
lvl 22+ http://biowarefans.c...aVrQfPYkRom0DlB

Stat alocation: http://www.the-guard...pg?m=1300422923
(Note: the critical dmg is from Devious Harm and Gear)

Unless you only attack casters you will want to use elemental damage weapons as soon as you are able to: Spirit ones are by far the best (50% less resistances) but once you get the nature dmg dagger nothing quite compares to it (its bad vs dragons so use something else)

Gear wise, you want physical damage and critical damage gear, crit chances is not too important you will have over 100% soon enough. Make sure your attack score is high enough to get 100% damage on everything

Setup for 25k-60k dmg is as follow:
1- Mark of Death (50% dmg one) on enemy
2- Have a mage make it Brittle (Petrify works best but will remove 20% dmg)
3- Cameleon Breath yourself or Stealth (for the 25% more crit dmg from Disorienting Criticals)
4 - Assasinate enemy
Optional 5 -  Have a mage with upgraded Stonefist hit the target (it will be disoriented from step 3)

Try putting the AoE up and grouping under it.

You need 2 mages in your party with the upgraded CCC version of Petrify, + one Rogue and one 2H warrior.

Hit both Assassins at once with Petrify/Dessicate

Cast Hex of Torment

your Rogue hits one of them with upgraded CCC version of Assassinate (I've seen more than 7000 damage from this), will probably one shot him.

Your 2H warrior hits the other with upgraded Mighty Blow, upgraded Scythe

Your Rogue hits the surviving Assassin with Exploding Arrow

if he survives, if your 2H warrior has Sunder and manages to make him STAGGERED, then have one of your mages cast upgraded CCC version of Chain Lightning.

Otherwise, have one of your mages cast Crushing prison or some kind of paralysis spell and take him out with your rogue and 2H warrior.

If you have 3 or more Assassins coming at you, it will be very tough but the strategy is the same, try to immobilize them, knock them down or stun them before they Stealth.

On one occasion I Petrified one before he stealthed, and when he came out of Stealth he was still BRITTLE and my Rogue one-shotted him.

Warrior with an upgraded shield wall is pretty much impervious to any rogue attack. Continually use taunt whenever it is possible to and they won't attack Anders, well this worked for me on nightmare anyway.

I usually used Varric, Sebastian and Aveline though, along with my shield warrior. Didn't have really any trouble against the assassins with this group. Just set their tactics to attack either Aveline's target, or your shield warrior's, and turn off their ability to use any area of effect attack.

@ TG-Nalfen: I asked this in another thread, but since you listed your build more here, I figured I'd repost it here.

What gear are you using to get your stats so high, if you don't mind me asking? I thought I had a lot of +stats on my rogue, but yours are noticeably higher. ><

EDIT: Answered in the other thread when I checked.

www.the-guardians.org/photo/var/albums/da2/gear.jpg

Ive gotten plenty of stats boost from various quests (and dealing with
demons :D) also never used a Maker's Sight Potion (it doesn't give back
bonus stats from items, potions and quests).

I somehow missed that rune... and also used the potion several times. ~_~

Use Taunt right after they disappear (if they are close enough). Glyph of Repulsion apparently works wonders too, though I haven't tested it. Also, add some decoys. Rogues have one, Sebastian has one, and the dog counts too.

I lol'd at the thought of everyone huddling in fear under an AoE hiding from the uber assassin.

Hiding in aoe doesn't exactly help on nightmare, i've yet to land a single petrify on them, simply impossible to nuke them down on low levels since they will pot. Investing in constitution might help but seeing as they 2 shot my tank (who incidentally is immume to flanking and crits) i doubt it will help enough.

Suppose my party set up simply sucks and i lack the neccesary single target damage

Yeah you need good disables and/or damage and a revealer for them.
The thing that really annoys me is that you can use a bow on non assassin from miles away but for the damn assassin you need to trigger there stealth before game lets you hurt them :(

They need to be bursted down with damage resistance lowering talents + CC. Or broken out of stealth with an AOE attack.

As soon as rogues show up I would go out of my way to group up my party and keep them obscured which makes the rogues miss their opening moves most of the time.  Some points in CON won't be wasted, and keeping rock armor up on mages helps a lot too.

Your tank should be on the lookout and intercept rogues before they target your mages.
