It is entire possible to be a video game expert (often in a specific genre). It is likewise possible to explain in great detail why something works or doesn't work. It's no different from being a movie critic.Essian wrote...
Errr... not to be a killjoy, but you DO understand that reviews are not FACTS correct? I mean, a reviewer is just a person, like you or me, who plays a game and then gets paid to give his opinion. But there is no way to be a video game connoisseur. It's not like being an architect and looking at a building, and then saying "this building is not structurally sound, because the physics employed in building it were flawed."
The 83 metacritic thread. I'm sorry he was right.

I never thought about it before, but the logic is totally there.
On a scale of 1 - 100, aka the school grade scale, a 50/100 would be absolute failure. So an 83/100, being a B, is a failure from a straight A student. Not to mention that, carrying on the school metaphor, this straight A student got the B whilst cheating at that.
As I once saw someone logically post, if a straight A student came home with a B or worse, they'd really get it from their parents.
I'm not even a straight A student and I get crap whenever I get anything less than an A. People want to cry and act like "Oh, it's still a good game! Stop being so mean to BioWare!" we have come to expect a certain level of excellence from BioWare, that's why we buy their games. This is their first (to my knowledge) major failure, it's their first B, when we except As. It's completely our right to be upset, and anybody who says otherwise is ignorant to human behavior and the nature of expectations. They probably get straight Cs and thus are never expected to perform well themselves, and so they accept a fall in quality.
You can expect an A all you want, but it still doesn't mean that you're right and that a game's a failure just because you personally don't approve of anything less than an A. You can be as disappointed as you want to be about the B, but that doesn't change the whole 0-100 scale into anything other than a 0-100 scale just because people have sky-high expectations. If anyone wants to, feel free to collate data from metacritic and go find every game that scored 80+, and then we can all discuss whether or not each one of them sucks just because they didn't get 90s.

People who claim "80% is not that bad" apparently don't realize that the scale for AAA titles is 7-10, not 0-10. If the score drops any lower the suits at EA will have a few uncomfortable talks with Bioware, if not already happened.
A lot of people don't realise that, or don't want to accept it. It's even worse really AAA titles only use the top 10% of the scale in big publications.

Plus Metacritic is not the most accurate arbiter of success to begin with, because it's open to abuse.

Many companies would consider 8x% to be decent. But considering the standard Bioware used to hold themselves to, it's a bit of disappointment.
How do you know they no longer strive for that goal?
Because they dared mention Call of Duty when talking about expanding their audience?
Because you personally did not like the game?
Because sites have been rating it in the 80s?
I mean, it's not that much of a stretch that BioWare is genuinely disappointed that they are getting 80s. I know the cool thing to do is paint them as villains that took away Baldur's Gate and are the first company ever to care about money, but just maybe they themselves are annoyed that the ratings across the board are not so hot.
It is only going to make for a better DA3. It means they'll examine what put them in the 80s.
And no. The moans of a forum that thinks they killed Julius Caesar will not factor into their decisions.

Not that I give to craps about Metacritic in any event, myself, the common consensus routinely disagrees with my opinions in BOTH directions, but still. "83," by my understanding, is still in the "decent-to-good" range, but also the unwritten "it's still nothing special" range.

You guys know all of you can register the game here on your account (or accounts, as many as you want) with these codes so you can post in whatever section of the site you want? They're the same for everyone, nothing you cant find by going to your local game retailer and looking at the bar code on the back of the box (or Google).

Can I tell you that on the scale 50 is average,70 is good which means yes you guessed it 83 is great even though it was sabotaged.Bioware are not going to go by metacritic where it can go from 0 to 10 from review to review. As I said before a review(as long a it is objectional) is an opinion ,nothing more nothing less.I proclaim right here and now my apology to Bioware for ever having doubts about DA2 in the months prior to release. This was mainly because there was so little information, but alas I have no excuse. So now Bioware can apologise to you OP because they have one back their way:)
Every point of view a human states in an opinion and thus biased. The only way to make it a bit objective is to compute the average of different opinions.
What would you base a game score on? Dice throwing?

Same I went from A's to B's and the school sent letters to my parents. I'd just discovered an interest in football so I just chose to coast rather than study. But it was seen as "letting the school down".
After football it was girls...Still managed a 1st but not with honours.
If you expect the best product then you have every right to complain because this is coasting by Bioware standards.
