I was actually wondering in one of the final act quests "Best served cold" who gets kidnapped if Bethany and Carver died in your earlier chapters. I had one where Bethany became a grey warden yet she got kidnapped (amazingly) and another one which Carver was a templar.
Who gets kidnapped if both of them died? Please don't tell me its uncle Gamlen.
So who gets kidnapped?

They kidnapped Anders, but Anders was in my party when I went to the meeting spot, so there were two Anders.

Maybe it's dependent on who is you best friend at the time. In my case it was Aveline that was kidnapped.

I think if you dont have siblings alive and no LI they just take the one with the highest Friend rating.

Hmmm... During my first playthrough after I rescued Bethany she just said 'thank you for rescuing me' and that was about it. Not sure if the dialogue with the LI is going to be worth not having that help at endgame.

On my first playthrough, Bethany died, and I wasn't romancing anyone, I refused Fenris, shoo'd Anders after he nearly snapped, and Isabella left with the tome of Koslun which left me with Varric, Aveline and Merril, pretty much what I had been using from the start. They kidnapped... Anders. Way to make me care, guys. xD

Anders got kidnapped on my playthrough. I flipped out when Keran said that they took "some mage out of Hightown," but yet I was still able to have Anders in my party.
I mean, I didn't take him with me to rescue himself (to avoid any awkwardness), but still...

When I killed Bethany in the Deep Roads they kidnapped Merrill who was actually my rival, when I was doing the chaste romance thing with Sebastian. I would have thought they'd take Varric since he was my Hawke's best bud...but no. It must be randomized after the sibling dies and there is no actual love interest.
