So at some time between DA: O and DA2, mages grew brains. Kinda.

It's always been a traditional shortcoming of the mage class that when an enemy gets in close, they're as good as dead, and in Origins it boiled down to either running away with your tail between your legs, or going "poke, poke, poke" with your magic staff and hoping this scared the problem away at some point. The only way for a mage to have good *melee* capabilities was to specialize as an Arcane Warrior and equip a sword.

In DA2, most of the staff weapons have some variety of polearm attachment, which struck me as freaking ingenious. Not only does it hypothetically make the mage look somewhat less mage-like to any Templars hunting apostates, it gives them a way to fight back at close range. And all it took was some duct-tape and a spearhead. Bravo.

A question worth asking, then, is: why is the Arcane Warrior specialization just no longer there? It would make more sense. Even with the spearhead, mages and melee really don't mix well, and yet in the Destiny trailer we get and awesome show of melee skills on Mage Hawke's part. Bah.

Never mind. The intelligence of such an addition is kind of over-ridden by the stupidity of being able to wear mage robes, buy mage robes, and otherwise do all sorts of stuff that screams "I AM AN APOSTATE" without provoking an assault by a swarm of Templars. But at least the question of how I can walk around with a massive magic staff on my back without arrousing suspicion has been answered...
