There don't seem to be any other healer type mages.
Even if I play as a mage, I don't have his Aid ALlies and Regroup skill.
How do you guys play without Anders? Just buy a bunch of potions?

Find better ways to prevent the damage in the first place (more killing power, more crowd control, more damage reduction, better threat management, simply not being where the damage happens...), and potions are more than enough.

I have everyone set to attack Hawke's target, with higher priority on actions to handle the occasional aggro loss, but they still attack targets other than mine. Just now, for example, I had made sure that my target was locked on before combat in order to avoid the "hey, Hawke briefly glanced at that, so I'm going to attack that regardless of what else he looks at" flaw I've encountered. During the fight, I saw a darkspawn start running away. Curious, I followed him while remaining locked on the other darkspawn and sure enough, Anders was persistently pew pewing this guy that I had never targeted.

I made it through Act 2 without using a healer at all. It's just a matter of learning how to play without one. Watching old Benny Hill reruns is good practice for doing this, by the way.
How? Don't you have to take Anders with you to do his personal quest? I haven't done this yet, but I am resigned to using him in at least this, probably the fade quest aswell because I don't want to lose Merril to treachery (I hear she turns hostile). If I'm not careful I can see myself being mageless untill I get Bethany back, since I also understand that Anders betrays you aswell (I'm a glutton for spoilers).

Maybe it can work you spend a lot of gold on the revive potions, but I'd rather save up for the knockback immunity ring and a few tomes.
I rarely make it through any big battle without reviving at least 2 dead party members

But even if you have another mage, Anders is actually the best healer simply because his cooldowns can be made lower.

It's frustrating that even having her at 100% friendship and romanced doesn't prevent that from happening.TeamLexana wrote...
Oh man when Merril when hostile she one shotted my whole party. I'm not even kidding. She's deadly. I had to go again and this time I ohcrapohcrapohcrap backstabbed, assasinated her, lol.
*I* can't survive nightmare without a healer, but that's mostly because I have a weird thing about wanting to avoid consumables as much as possible in RPGs (ie: Res bombs.) But I guess some people can, so more power to them.

Was a bit hard in the fade though. Lucky the firestorm spell is so outrageous.

I don't mind chugging potions, the things that annoy me in RPGs are the "Does X for Y seconds" items. Like the elemental balms in Origins--I sold every single one I ever picked up. Same with poisons, grenades and traps. It just stresses me out the more finite resources I have to manage, so I opt to just ignore them 99% of the time even if it would make certain fights much easier.
I DO EXACTLY THAT LOL.
And I thought i was strange for doing that. I hate having to keep track of the time limits on everything since whenever I switched back to that character, I'd have to apply it again and it annoyed me to no end.
I prefer just using a tank, healer, and me as dps with better crod controlling to make up for it. But I will absolutely refuse to use time limit potions. And even health pots I'd prefer to avoid.

rofl @ bison of course pic!
to the OP: yea, i hate it, too. was same issue in da1 really. if you don't make your main a mage (i'm always a rogue), you're stuck w/very limited choices for healing. especially in this one, tho, as merrill has NO heal tree. bethany had one in act 1, but then she poofs. it sucks.
