I don't mind chugging potions, the things that annoy me in RPGs are the "Does X for Y seconds" items. Like the elemental balms in Origins--I sold every single one I ever picked up. Same with poisons, grenades and traps. It just stresses me out the more finite resources I have to manage, so I opt to just ignore them 99% of the time even if it would make certain fights much easier.

I never use these things either, but I also never sell them. This is a thing I should do differently.

I did something similar -- I sold every one except the strongest, and then kept those in my vault.  And then never used them...

I regularly go around with just Merril. I just needed to get over my bias against using consumables. :)

Use up your regular potions first, as they drop as loot so long as the quantity of potions is below a certain threshold (8 or less at hard, for example). Just keep in mind that unlike DAO, in DA2 your first layer of healing is MEANT to be your potions. Healing spells are mostly for emergencies (or if you are about to win and just need a quick heal to make it through).

I used anders as a battle mage.  his skills are pretty useless on nightmare

Anders and Merril are dealing massive damage with the Primal CCC spells for me on Nightmare. Not to mention having two mages who can Petrify/Dessicate dual enemy assassins is huge. I hit a Petrified, Hex of Torment-ed Assassin with my lvl 15 Rogue who has the upgraded CCC version of Assassinate, and I one shotted him with 7000+ damage. (I've seen screenshots of people doing this for 440000 damage)

Bethany was useless for me because she does not have access to the Primal spells or any Revive spell.

And Anders can instantly group revive the entire party, even if the dead party members are on the other side of the map.

The poisons in DA2 are pretty cool IMO because they work for a long period of time, through multiple battles. For example, everyone in my party was using Deathroot Toxin on the Ancient Rock Wraith and then years later when we got back to Kirkwall for Act 2, the poison was still active on my weapons

Nightmare can be done without Anders, if you use a Shield warrior. I usually had Aveline, Sebastian and Varric/Bethany/Merril.

I usually sold all the weak ones but once I got Zevran, it'd be one with posion making. I'd make stacks of the strongest ones that used ingrediants that I could buy infinate quantity and I'd make stacks of potent health potions, potent lyrium potions, and swift salves. Posions wouldn't last long but while they did, oh man, it was nice. Big dps boost and many of them had potential to stun their victim so a backstabber could get a easy backstab to the face on them. Try it. Trust me.

I did use balms but not alot. Mainly I'd save the spirit shards and horde them in the chest at warden's keep so I can make at least 8 Greater Spirit Balms to protect my whole party against spirit damage against the arch demon at the end. Any extra spirit shards and I'd use them for soulrot coating - which is good for the broodmother because she's highly resistant to most other posions since they deal nature damage. Concentrated Demonic posion is good to stack with the soulrot too if you want but you have to watch out for and horde the demonic ichor - it's not sold in infinate quanties anywhere.

If you play on the PC download the mod that gives companions access to skill trees they don't normally get, like giving Merril the creation tree (no Anders required then, even on nightmare), but if you don't play the "fixable" PC version, thank bioware for being awesome. Hell, IMO any mage should be able to cast a basic healing spell and bioware's companion design kind of irks me this go around.

no way should she be aloud to heal, i mean... really? this is just saying, hey the game is too hard, i need a back up tank / healer dps please, thanks.

with stagger so easy to achieve, all you need is 6 points in a mage to say, yeah my mage can cause some damage to a target i really need to take out (crushing prison, elemental weapons and chain lightning), throw on blood mage and rock armor to have a back up tank... merrill is good where she's at, she does not need the creation tree.

I did the same in Origins. I hated all the ingredients and plants and salves or whatever sitting in my inventory. Never used any, still beat it in nightmare mode.
