Now I havent played in nightmare at all before but I'm bored and was looking to give it a go. I see all these threads about builds and tactics and party set ups etc so I can see how you need to make heavy use of CCC's and control and AoE's that arent freindly fire and other such things but jumping in as a mage I'm getting creamed by the first sibling killing ogre fight.

At this stage you have no combos, you don't have a good party makeup, you have no useful spells or DLC gear or makers sighs and it basically has each time ended up with me with only 1 person alive against the ogre. The 2 melee just get decimated without any decent support or passive abilities at this stage either by getting surrounded and unable to run as the ogre smashes them or just being killed by 3-4 things they can't beat even 1v1 (seriously I had carver go against one of the higher health ones all on his own and die).

At this point its run around in circles pressing one button every 10s or so and then hoping you are quick enough to run away again. Repeat this for about 10 mins and hope you don't screw up and have to do it all over again (and naturally having never done this before i keep screwing it up).

Is this pretty much all their is to it or is there some basic tips n tricks i'm missing out on here cause honestly whilst i'd enjoy having to utilise tactics and placement running round like a headless chicken for 10mins isnt really my idea of fun and is really making me rethink giving it a go

The first part is lame, just get past it and once you get more skills on your characters it improves greatly.

at this point, i can't remember if you can have the improved winter's grasp. If you can have it, it will be a godsend against the ogre.

In nightmare, you have to reduce the numbers of mobs first, so have Aveline tank the ogre and kill the mobs from behind with carver and your mage.

be careful about not letting aveline die, and never let your character i na normal slugfest (you have to control them to 'dodge').

Keep in mind you should use your characters to provoke the troll into rushing at you through his own mobs (it kills them), and dodge out of there before he begins his rush.

Also, tell us your spell choice.

Horror is a godly talent for the Oger fight :)

Being I was planning to go into primal for the CCC i took rock armor and chain lightning for the 2 points you have at that point. Hence my running around wildly pressing 1 button every 20s. Can aveline survive for any amount of time against the ogre or am i going to have to be dodging everything he does combined with running around constantly with the other 2 because if 1 catches me i die and carver will die if he gets more than one on him

I think it is called "nightmare" for a reason.

Or you could call it "Micromanagemare" instead. ;-)

I guess from all the discussions about builds and tactics and what party members to use I was expecting it to be more tactical and less 'how fast can you run around spamming buttons and then running some more'.

I'm really wondering if the whole game is like this as a mage on nightmare and i should either learn how or give up or should i stick through this part (perhaps even lowering it down to get through it) and then enjoy the tactical decision making side of it as you gain all your party members and abilities?

Aveline should resist against the ogre for a while.

Do make sure to make her dodge as much as you can though. Have Carver attack from behind, use chain lightining, *and don't forget mind blast*.

Mind blast is very useful, though you have to make sure none of your other guys are near your hawke. it can give you 2-3 seconds of free bashing their heads in.

Well, I am currently playing through nightmare trying to tank and spank as much and only kiting things that are really meant to be avoided, like the ogre's charge and similar. It is certainly doable taht way.

As for that fight in particular, I usually give my mage heal to start and the upgrade, after that primal is fine although be aware that a lot of stuff is immmune to lightning, but things that aren't die really fast.

I suppose you could start primal right away, then you have to consider giving Aveline the upgraded shieldbash, but you won't get it in time for that fight. Personally I like giving her upgraded stonewall and bolster so she is invulnerable up to 50% of the time.

If you dodge the smash and the charge Aveline should be able to survive long enough to take the ogre down. The adds go down fast if you let the ogre help kill them.

In my opinion nightmare is broken early in the game.  Tactics don't work, you have to micro every NPC, and all the experts use unbalanced abilties (like Horror), or the typical kite, pull techniques.  You can use any mage (Bethany or PC) and run in circles, avoid the big slow attacks and fireball the Ogre to death.  It's just weird, the game moves at a fast pace but you have to spend forever pausing and using a handful of gimics (DLC, certain abilities- spells) to survive the lower levels.  In origins, you can start with any build and make it work, if you make a mistake in DA2 with abilities, you will die and die fast.
