I've seen multiple posts complaining that the assassins cannot be hurt when invisible and are teleporting around the battlefield.

I don't think this is true. Firstly, there's a loading screen tip that says you can get them with AOE.

Also, when I was just fighting Bartrand, Varric shot him just as he stealthed. Because the game shows arrows poking out of people who've just been shot, there was then an arrow walking around the room, presumably attached to the invisible Bartrand.

I've also had blood spatters from invisible people show up when doing whirlwind and two hander swings.

Anyone had any luck with AOE?

You should be able to hit them with AOEs that do damage as long as they are in the area. They pick targets differently than other enemies when they are stealthed so you may have just missed.

As for them teleporting, they use 'backstab' when they come out so in that sense they teleport, but only when coming out, not while invisible.
