I can confirm that upgraded mindblast does NOT work.

I'm afriad you are wrong. Any attack that can make them flinch can knock them out of stealth, I've used Mind Blast dozens of times on them. Bare in mind on higher difficulties they have a much higher fortitude and a ridiculous amount of HP, if that particular assassin is a higher level than your mage it's likely the physical force isn't enough to make them stagger.

You can hit them with AOEs while they're stealthed, but for at least 2 seconds when they are activating stealth, they are invincible. i.e. their stealth move cannot be interrupted. pisses me off when i waste my AOEs trying to get them.

I play on nightmare.
And I have NEVER EVER hit a rogue that stealthed - or if I hit him he did NOT drop out of stealth anyway.
they even disappear when stonefist are inches from their face and petrifies have been all but cast, effectively wasting the mana and cooldown.
Plus they can instantly switch from lying on the ground to backflip-stealth.
Ah yes and they can drink potions under almost any and all circumstances, sometimes when petrified or stunned.
LAME

especially since my rogue can do nothing of the above :-(

Oh and some rogues have backstab whcih actually lets them teleport short distances.

I've hit them with things like mindblast, but not tempest.I think the difference is mind blast hits everything in the area, tempest kind of targets enemies. If they are stealthed they can't be targeted. I've gotten lucky once when one unstealthed to back stab right as I threw a chain lightning and that interrupted his attack.

Fist of the maker can knock them out of stealth and stun them. Also gravitic ring on an assassin->assassin stealths->assassin reappears in the same place. HA ha (Nelson laugh)

Well, they definitely can't be targetted while stealthing, because the AI is a cheating bastard. This means, that if I get one in a gravitic ring stun, and it tries to stealth then, I end up with an assassin stuck in spot for a good 15 seconds, where my party is simply unable to target or hit him.

For me, when dealing with assassins, I like to have Hawke (mage) cast petrify, and then have Fenris turn on cleave and pound away. Generally I find it most effective to stun up as many assassins as possible (petrify, gravitic ring, and horror), and then kill them as quickly as possible. Two characters focused on one assassin, two characters focused on clearing the room of squishies. Same strategy with mages. Except those sometimes die very quickly.
