Merrill: I heard Varric say you used to be a Grey Warden.
Anders: I was.
Merrill: I met a warden once, back in Fereldan. Duncan, I think his name was. Very odd man. He had a marvelous beard though. I'd never seen one before. I thought a squirrel had grabbed him by the chin.

I laughed so much when I heard that in game. Merrill has some of the funniest dialogue.

There are tons of small references like that in the game. Never seen this particular one despite making a  playthrough with Merril and Varric as permanent party members.:happy:

It's banter between Merrill and Anders, not Merrill and Varric.

It's banter between Merrill and Anders, not Merrill and Varric.

Yeah. Varric plays no part, but there is banter between Varric and Fenris about Varric's beard.

I just found the ring "Three Wolf Boon." I groaned and facepalmed.

I doubt I'll get the Merrill beard banter... I think she and Anders talk about Mahariel if you import a Dalish warden (and I don't think I'll ever manage to play Origins again, and if I do, I won't make it my "canon" worldstate).

this was one of my favorite parts of the game

She mentions that the only other time she'd seen a human was when Duncan recruited the Dalish warden. I guess she's seen no humans if you don't choose such a backstory.

She's never met humans before unless you import a dalish warden or use the ultimate sacrifice.

I got it and I used the Martyr default, which was  Dalish elf, I believe.

I chuckled when Isabela talked about Donnic mastering Aveline's taint.

I haven't heard a Merrill Anders conversation where Anders wasn't antagonising Merrill in both my playthroughs.. And I chose 'The Martyr' for my second playthrough because I didn't have a complete Dalish save.

You do not need a Dalish elf to trigger that specific banter. I imported a male noble and still got it. From what I understand Duncan went to the Dalish but the would-be Warden does not survive the whole Eluvian part if you choose another origin. At least that is what I've thought all along.
