What is the idol?  Is it addressed in cannon anywhere?

I ask this because it seems that the idol is not cursed but rather posessed.

The idol "sings' to people, which is how archdemons control darkspawn.

The idol conveys a level of power that is far beyond what a normal chunk of lirium would be capable of holding within.

The idol is located 3 rooms away from a pretty large dragon.

Is this how archdeomons are prepared prior to their surfacing?  Like at a certain point you toss the idol into the crib ofa huge dragon who eventually comes under it's control and somehow ingests the vessel...or some more elegant form of bonding?

Is it possible that the idol contains the bound spirit of an archdemon and that control of humans by such a creature requires only physical contact?

Is that evil now resident in "the scream" metal Meredith jsut awaiting an adventageous host to come along?

Clearly it is not dead, this thing.

It's the ancient evil that we got told we won't have to fight in DA2. Just sayin'.

i think that what ever made this idol is the thing that corrupted the old gods with that it seems the chantry is wrong in what it says about the darkspawn maybe it is this unknown evil that corrupts not the darkspawn themselves as the architect claims in awakening that darkspawn corrupt the old gods when they find them which may not be the case

Well the Chantry blames the Tevinters and magic for everything evil in the world. And such things as this ancient evil relic kinda show how little the chantry actually knows of the world or of evil as such.

The first darkspawn came from underground and the first to fall were the dwarven kingdoms. So I'd say that the dwarves in their stereotypical digging into the deeps of the world actually discovered some ancient evil that was locked there for a long time.

I don't know exactly how it is connected to the tevinters' entering the fade. It may be a made up story to agitate people against the magisters, or there may have been some sort of coincidence in which the magisters entered the fade and at the same time as they entered, the dwarves unlocked some ancient evil so the tevinters got screwed since it probably also had an impact on the fade.

Anyway there seem to exist ancient evils even the chantry is unaware of.

Given Meredith in the boss battle, it's clearly Reaper technology. Saren all over again :P

Read your journal sometime on the Profane. It stated exactly what the Lyrium is, they even stated how they fed on 'god'.

Meaning the Profane were once dwarves. Secondly, look at the idol itself. It had a figure, one which closely resembled Meredith after she 'blew up'. I don't think she died, persay.

The Presence of the Idol, and the corrupted lyrium infect Kirkwall. You begin to see it in the 2nd Act of playthrough and the agitation and fighting is strongly connected to it's presence. A single shard of it causes a disturbance in the Mansion, so imagine what it is capable of.

Varric's brother even says, "She won't feed it like I was."

What was he feeding it? Something he was doing was making it stronger.

That the idol is made of lirium seems to be convenient rather than a driving force in what it represents. Lirium makes a good vessel I guess. We are encouraged at first to see this a "lirium on steroids" when what it contains the actual source of its bizarrely-acute power.

One of the things that made me wonder more about the idol is that bartrand seems to hit harder than any other mob in the game, yet he uses no magic in his fighting style. he is a Dwarf after all, and a rogue.

There is no indication given before this encounter that he is anywhere near as fierce, or a fighter at all.
