I just bought Mass Effect on steam and I'm currently installing the free DLC, so anyone have any tips and basic pointers? Most of what I have found seems to be for ME2 which I understand is different?

Help regarding builds? I can provide info for your Shep and Squad, depending on which class you would prefer. Do you have an idea on how you would like to play the game?

I'm leaning towards a Vangurad at the moment.

Also in character creation I scrolled through the preset character appearances but I've decided I want to keep the default Shepard appearance and just change his hair and maybe give him a scar but he dosn't appear to be on of the default appearances. So do I have to either have him how he is or give it my best shot at making a character look like him?

Also are there any mods out for ME1?

Not sure about mods for ME1, but there are changes that can be made with ME2.

With faces you either have the default face, often called Sheploo after the actual model the face is based off of Mark Vanderloo. You can't modify the default face, so you are limited to the others.

ME1 faces are really an art form, so going with the default is fine, I've spent too many hours tinkering with that myself. =]
In ME2, if you make a new face, provides a code you can use, so you can use face codes from other gamers also.

Anyway, the Vanguard in ME1 is a good start, here is one recommendation for the ME1 Vanguard and Squad capped at level 50 with 8 points in either Charm or Intimidate for Shepard. The idea with investing points into that Talent in one playthough is to pass as many speech checks as possible. Also here is a Talent Calculator you can use.

12 - Pistols
12 - Shotguns
05 - Assault Training
07 - Tactical Armor
08 - Throw
07 - Lift
05 - Warp
12 - Barrier
12 - Shock Trooper
08 - Charm or Intimidate
04 - Spectre Training

And as a Specialist in Combat and Biotics you will need at least one Squadmate that has some Tech, so that can be Kaidan, Tali, or Garrus.
(Liara if you unlock Decryption is another option for future playthroughs, but you would need to make a new Shepard to unlock in the first place, I can explain more if you want on how that works.)

Kaidan
12 Throw
12 Lift
12 Barrier
00 Stasis
09 Decryption
09 Electronics
05 First Aid
07 Medicine
06 Sentinel

Ash
04 Pistols
11 Shotguns
11 Assault Rifles
12 Sniper Rifles
07 Combat Armor
00 First Aid
09 Assault Training
12 Fitness
06 Soldier

Garrus
06 Assault Rifles
12 Sniper Rifles
11 Tactical Armor
07 Assault Training
09 Decryption
12 Damping
07 First Aid
02 Electronics
06 Turian Agent

Wrex
06 Assault Rifles
12 Shotguns
12 Combat Armor
12 Fitness
12 Warp
00 Throw
12 Barrier
00 Stasis
06 Krogan Battlemaster

Tali
06 Pistols
07 Shotguns
07 Basic Armor
01 First Aid
09 Electronics
12 Damping
12 Decryption
12 Hacking
06 Quarian Mechanic

Liara
12 Throw
12 Lift
12 Warp
05 Singularity
12 Barrier
00 Stasis
04 First Aid
09 Electronics
06 Asari Scientist

And my own favorite squad is going with Wrex and Tali, or later on with a higher level Shepard, Tali and Liara.

Ask away if you have any more questions.

I'd probably go with an adept before vanguard, so you can unlock singularity for a bonus. It really helps vanguard to have that for a bonus talent.

There may be a few mods but they're mostly skins due to the lack of a tool set.

Mostly though on a first playthrough don't worry about a great build, just relax and enjoy the game.  On the first playthrough I'd lean toward putting a few points into charm or intimidate.  You'll get up to four free on one of them, but on the first pass it's always nice to have the extra conversation options.

Oh and save before you land on a planet.  Some of the missions can be a bit rough if you don't know what you're doing.  That way if you find you can't deal with the mission, you can just load the prelanding save and go level up some and come back later.

Hm, basic tips:
1. You can tell your squad what to do, so do it. Ie: Tell them when to get to cover, what powers to use, who to attack. They are alright on their own, but if you help them, the game is infinitely better.
2. After one playthrough, try a different class or difficulty. I know too many people who keep them the same and changing such can dramatically change the game.
3. Upgrade your stuff. Change armors and guns for yourself and your squad and change ammo/upgrades for them.

That's all that's coming to me at the moment. Hope this helps.

And you can't alter default Shep's appearance. You get him, or a set of presets you can alter.

So if I get Mass Effect 2 after this I can change what Shepard looks like even if I "update" the game with my save game from this one? In that case I might just go with default Shepard for now.

I'll probably do 2 play throughs anyway, so maybe I'll give appearance editing a go the secong time round.

And thankyou, I'll definitly be reffering back here to get a rough idea of how to develop my characters.

Well for some character build stuff check the strategy and build forums.

Here's a thread that I put together about a year ago with some basic builds and advice.

Here's one that has some solid one playthrough builds

Thanks you two.

And Sarah, I allways change difficulty, class and who I use in my party if I play through this type of game more than once. I can't imagine not doing it!

Yes, you can edit your imported Shepard looks.

What follows is a personal, biased opinion based in what I find to be best, not really an "advice"...

Have fun. Play. Don't worry about "omg if I put one point here, I won't be able to do get this skill until I'm level 14 and my build will be suboptimal" or "I'm not doing this because when I import my character in ME2 I don't want this to happen" or "I really like this companion but this other, more boring one has more health points and 5 points in this skill and 8 points in that skill and blah blah blah, so I'll pick him instead" or "I'd really like to give that response but I can't because I'm doing a Paragon playthrough" and things like that. Don't meta-game. Roleplay. Submerge yourself in the story!

Don't worry, that is how I generally play anyway. Especially the first 2/3 times I play.

Enjoy, both games are worth the time in my humble opinion.

And happy hunting,.

I got one advise: Try to don't kill anyone with the Mako, use it only to weaken the enemy. When you kill "external" enemies on foot (enemies you find where you can go with the mako), you win almost the double of XP. Also, its a lot more fun to fight them on foot. Mako is overpowered and will be more challenging if you only use it for transport.
