Decided on my second playthrough I want to play a dirty rotten scoundrel. Gonna laugh as I cause havoc, and I'll step on anyone for a bit of coin. Sounds fun =P
Anyway, I'm having problems deciding if I want to play a DW or an Archer. Which one do you guys think is more fun? (I'll be playing on Nightmare).

Archer needs a bit more babysitting and is a more overseeing the battlefield type of approach.....boils dow to if you like ranged or close combat

I've tried both but not on Nightmare.
I liked archer the most. They switch between targets very quickly and generally hit extremely hard (though not nearly as fast as DW rogues). It's always safer to be ranged too, and knockdowns are extremely annoying so just being able to avoid them more easily is a big deal to me.
Archers are weak early on though because you use up stamina too quickly and can't replenish it (you NEED Bloodlust for this, unless you want to drink potions constantly). But they are incredible once they have Bloodlust, Devious Harm, Assassinate and Punishing Lance.

Anyone know if Assassinate is a DW skill only?

It isn't.

If you are playing a Rogue as PC, you really don't have to choose between DW or Archery, you can have your cake and eat it too.
I started out exclusively as DW rogue on nightmare, but found a really powerful bow and realized I should put at least a few points into Archery.
IMO the most fun build for Rogue Hawke is DW with some Archery points, with Assassin for first specialization.
Here is a build I'm planning to re-spec to - note that I think Disorienting Shot seems to be bugged, and it doesn't provide any DISORIENT effect, but Explosive Shot does have increased damage on BRITTLE enemies.
CROSS class COMBOS
Set up DISORIENTED enemies (-50% defense)
-Pinning Shot+Disorienting Shot (currently bugged, hopefully will be fixed in a patch)
-Disorienting Criticals
-Fatiguing Fog+Overpowering Fog
-Confusion+Chaos
Extra damage on BRITTLE (takes +50% critical damage)
-Bursting Arrow+Shattering Arrow (+600% damage vs BRITTLE)
-Assassinate+Annihilate (+400% dmg vs BRITTLE)
-Archer's Lance + Punishing Lance (+600% dmg vs BRITTLE, +6 base dmg vs BRITTLE) - I don't think I can reach a high enough level to have enough talent points for this one
Extra damage on STAGGERED (-25% attack, -25% defense)
- Explosive Strike+Merciless Strike (+400% dmg vs STAGGERED)
- Lacerate+Main (+100% dmg vs STAGGERED)
ATTRIBUTES
High Dex, Cunning, some points in Con, Willpower and a few points in STR.
I already found two different items that boost lockpick score, so the highest Cunning you need in order to open Master locks is only 20. (each items boosts cunning 10 points for lockpick and trap disarm purposes), however with Devious Harm, every cunning point adds to critical dmg percent.
ABILITIES
1. Miasmic Flask
2. Backstab (Requires Level 2)
3. Rush (Requires Level 3)
4. Unforgiving Chain (Requires Level 3)
5. Evade
6. Pinning Shot (Requires Level 2)
7. Explosive Strike (Requires Level 4)
(I would use one Tome of Physical Technique from Hubert's Goods before going to Deep Roads)
Specialization: Assassin (Requires Level 7)
Tome #1. Bloodlust (Requires Level 8)
8. Mark of Death (Requires Level 7)
9. Pinpoint Strikes (Requires Level 9)
10. Assassinate (Requires Level 10)
11. Stealth (Requires Level 3)
12. Merciless Strike (Requires Level 8)
13. Bursting Arrow (Requires Level 3)
Tome #2. Shattering Arrow (Requires Level 9)
Tome #3. Disorienting Shot (Requires Level 8) - I would skip this unless fixed in a patch
Tome #4 Annihilate
Level 14 Specialization - Shadow (Requires Level 14)
(I believe there are 3 more Tomes/Potions available in Act 2.)
14. Perforate (Requires Level 6)
15. Pinpoint Precision (Requires Level 7)
16. Silent Running (Requires Level 7)
17. Overkill (Requires Level 16)
18. Relentless Strikes (Requires Level 13)
19. Devious Harm (Requires Level 12)
20. Lingering Shroud (Requires Level 6)
21. Blindside (Requires Level 5)
22. Back-to-Back (Requires Level 3)
23. Twist the Knife (Requires Level 7)
24. Ambush (Requires Level 4)
25. Charge (Requires Level 7)
26. Fatiguing Fog (Requires Level 7)
27. Disorienting Criticals (Requires Level 9)
28. Chameleon's Breath (Requires Level 4)
29. Chameleon's Cloud (Requires Level 7)
30. Confusion (Requires Level 5)
31. Overpowering Fog (Requires Level 13)
32. Chaos (Requires Level 9)
33. Impenetrable Fog (Requires Level 11)
34. Lacerate (Requires Level 5)
35. Maim (Requires Level 4)
The level cap is 50, but 30-35 is probably the highest possible level you can reach without exploiting any glitches or cheats.

A good archer build is much stronger than a DW build, DPS speaking. It requires more work/knowldge and it is more stamina dependent (since talents as Follow Through are not so good for bows) but in the end a Rogue Archer is one of the most powerful builds of the game DPS wise.
I remember doing about 40-45k max damage with an archer, while for a DW the max I obtained was about 20-25k.

playing nightmare...
My archer is halfway through act 2, 87% critical hit rate, and those crits land for 600ish (on average, sometimes much higher) damage on basic auto-attack. It is also all but invincible with 80% dodge vs. everything and all the "oh sh!t, get me outta here" panic buttons that rogues have.

What does max damage have to do with DPS? Do you have any actual optimized and objective testing that supports the idea that Archers do higher DPS than Dual Wield rogues?
