for example when it says the staff has +22 spirit damage, does the mage throw spirit balls or whenever he attacks with the staff there is extra spirit damage?
is staff a ranged weapon?

All staves have a damage type. In your example, the spirit damage is not extra. It's the damage base. They do the same damage at range and in melee.

The staff is mainly ranged as you will do better damage using it that way than trying to whack at your enemies at close range, as I believe that will use your STR as damage modifier (?)

what i also wondered if a staff says "physical damage" does the mage go melee then?

No, it just means that it can do physical damage at either melee or long range whichever is applicable at that moment, i.e. depending on how close the mage is to his target. If it helps, think of it as working like a bow at that point.WeedyWeedy wrote...

You are very misinformed.
The only thing that changes when an enemy is in melee range of a mage is the animation. The damage and stats used for determining that damage stays the same.
As for the post regarding physical damage staves, that just means the damage type is telekinetic, similar to the damage that crushing prison or fist of the maker does. The attack animation visually looks like a blast of telekinetic energy.
