Neither is a bad romance or a bad character they just fall short of past Bioware characters and need more added depth.

Honestly this time around the straight male romance options didn't really appeal to me much. Which is a little odd because with the previous game I actually had a hard time choosing because I liked both. This time I didn't like either of them, at least for a romance. And in my first canon play through the two of them were the ones I had the worst relationship with. Merrill was my rival and Isabella was still technically neutral.

I'm going a second time and I don't mind them so much for my second character but still they didn't connect with me as much as I would have liked or anywhere like the love interests in Mass Effect 1,2 or DAO. Heck even non romance-able characters in Awakening connected with me more. I probably would have jumped at the chance to romance Sigrun.

I think it's partly because neither of them really were compatible with the type of hero I had created. Merrill was into  blood magic, and Isabella was too much of a pirate as it turned out. I know you can rivalrymance people but I just didn't feel like I could feel much romantically for characters that seemed to be the enemy of much of what I stood for.

I suppose wildly different alignments wasn't a problem for my Warden who romanced Morrigan, but then...I think she has a hugely unfair advantage of Claudia Black's voice.

I'm really not a Merrill fan, so I doubt I'll be romancing her anytime soon. However, Isabela wasn't bad, if a bit boring. Her back story is what makes it I think.

My character being a Shadow Assassin (rogue) I HAD to romance Isabela but Merrill's romance is better, I admit (did it w/ Warrior character).
I'm not gay so I didn't try w/ Fenris... and Anders is really pathetic in DA2.

I didn't like any of the male romance options, but the female ones aren't much better, except Sebastian who isn't really a romance option.
The game expects us to start flirting with companions aferter having what, three or four conversations with them? Unless they give me a fashion model or a rich heiress as a companion or I doubt that's going to happen.

I hope It's not the main reason, because that would be incredibly stupid.
After all, the romance part is a very small aspect of that game. But then, the basic gamer prefers submissive bimbos without background (=marital slaves).

btw Merrill doesnt look 10 to me, she's just tiny & "elvish" Does Natalie Portman look 10? No. Personally, I'd prefer a curvy Isabela but her badass & free spirited attitude frightens unsure men. Hence the hatred.

As for Merrill's "immature" dialogues: take it as a joke. She's an IMMIGRANT Dalish who doesnt know anything about human society so she constantly makes a fool of herself. Like Borat, but less trashy. Not naive, just ignorant. btw that changes with time.

I agree with the OP. Isabella's chest reminds me too much of Japanese action/button masher videogame characters, while Merrill is plain stupid. I mean, seriously, she really doesn't expect to be betrayed by a demon?! So we get a loose hot chick and a cute girl with dark streak and has a good hint of stupidity. Seriously, who the hell used and include these overused arche/stereo-types???

She did,and thats why she asked hawke to kill her if something goes wrong with her. ALso,there are demons who honor their deal,like conors desire demon.

Demons are willing to trade for rhings other than the mages body - she already made one deal with it and has had years to think up other trades.

I totally agree with this, its unfortunate that some people can't see the depth to Isabela and they only see the banter and not the underlying meaning for it.  I don't see anything wrong with a woman enjoying sex as much as a man and be just as forward or open about it, but a woman is called a **** or **** for doing the same things a man does, did we timewarp back to the puritan age?

Last Hawke I made was the first to get Isabella to stay, played the two first pretty much blind an didn't find gifts. So an and so forth. However, I like how she changed by Act 3. Hubby's first Hawke romanced her and he was very happy with that arc. I've tried Merrill and Anders romance so far. Everyone has their own opinion and I would say that Merrill and Isabella have a lot to offer, both as friends and romance =) I have no complaints regarding their looks but I guess that's why you can always use mods if you feel the need.

I wouldn't even call her overconfident. She knew the risks, but was too stubborn to realize when she should just cut her losses and move on.

Thats right.And that the demon didnt outright possesed her,shows that she knew how to handle and control them.Far better then anders i guess who get overwhelmed by the "good pirit" justice in one quests and nearly killed an innocent.

Merrill is pure win. I swear I went through the whole thing wondering wth was wrong with everyone. Anders especially with his constant picking at her really irritated me.

I'll admit that there wasn't much to her romance, was a little bummed by how sparse any kind of romantic dialog was.

I had her back the whole time. Like I'm worried about a demon coming through the mirror. I'd have killed it like a thousand other demons. Big deal. Gotta keep my sweetie Merrill safe! rawr!

That was one of the things that irritated me about Isabela's background too. "OMG Castillo is gonna kill me if I don't take him this book."

Me: Well, tell him to bring it! Really? You're scared of some random dude? We just took down an entire gang of bloodmages and undead followed by an elder dragon. And that was before lunch! For dinner I had about 40 qunari followed by a nice Arishok for dessert. Tell Castillo to bring his own bodybag.

And to those ragging on Isabela, get over it. She likes to get laid. NEWSFLASH! sex is fun. Why is it any guy who sleeps around is a hero and any girl that does becomes pariah. Double standard 4tw.

BTW having Isabela and Merrill in your group together really brings out Isabela's sweet side.

I roll with Varric (cause he's the man) Merrill (my sweetie-pie) and Isabela (Capt.Jacqueline Sparrow).
